Hey all, I haven't posted in a while.
I recently started going to a sax teacher a few weeks ago. Everything is going fine with it he's teaching me a lot of stuff.
At my most recent lesson he gave me a plastic cover reed. It's a reed that is half black and half wood and the black part looks like its made from wood but it doesnt warp or anything like that.
I found it really brought out my lower register well and made my sound a lot stronger. My teacher said the same thing.

I just wanted to know if anybody else has had any experience with these reeds.
thank you.

hi there
I use the rico plastic cover ones for my tenor and soprano. I am pleased with them - I need to use them as my lips are allergic to reed (yes bizarre I know....see my earlier postings baout sore lips!)
I have been pleased with them

best wishes
Helen

Hi, I tried one a few weeks ago, to start off it was petty good but for no reason I can find it just stopped playing and I mean stopped :erm: :S

I also think (Rico) plastic cover (are there any other plastic cover brand on the market?) blows strong and loud. Great reeds for Rocksax!! Plastic cover is also fine if you are doubling. They stay in better shape between the songs. I'm playing LaVoz reeds but if LaVoz were available plastic coated I would prefer that.

A Rico Plasticover reed is a Rico Royal cane reed coated in plastic. There are fully synthetic reeds available. The brand names are Legere, Bari, Fibracell and Hahn. I keep a Plasticover handy as they always play on bad reed days.

I use plasticovers quite a lot and really like them, although at the moment I've gone back to my Rico jazz selects for a while.

Well now wasn't that an interesting and useful contribution. I think I'll just go back into the airing cupboard.

Just received a couple of Rico plasticovers and tried one this evening.
First impression: nice sound, slightly louder, and low notes seem easier to get, though might have just been a good day!
Hope mine doesn't sieze up like Smiffy's!

I was given a plasticover by my teacher when I had started on Soprano Sax - didn't like it at all - preferred Vandoren V16 or ZZ then.

I am still on Marca Jazz reeds for Tenor, which I even prefer to my RJS collection.

Night, dudes!
Tom
