Filtering new posts is not new, but since the 3rd party content ignore feature is temporarily unavailable it seems a good time to explain and explore the filter. Also a lot of people new to the forum may not be aware of this very powerful feature.

By default when you go to New (via the big NEW button), you are shown posts based on your cusom filters, e.g. show only unread, watched content, unanswered etc. The filters can work live or can be saved as preferences (via the save as default link at the bottom of the filter list)

If you do have filters set as preferences, you can easily switch:

• You should see the filter name at the top of the list (Show only...) - just click on the x to remove
• Via the submenu item All new posts which shows the unfiltered new list.

How does this help with ignoring?

You can choose to filter only watched content, which will show

• The threads you are watching (either manually or via posting in)
• The (sub) forums you are watching.

The second point means that if you are watching certain forums, then the others will not show. To ignore just one (sub)forum, you'd need to be watching all the others.

I haven't actually put this fully to the test yet so would be grateful for any members to try this and report back. (Note there is an option to watch new threads or new messages).

While I am testing you notice that test posts now show in the (unfltered) list. Normally these are not included in any new post list, but I am doing this for test purposes so you may see them unless filtering them out.

Note that if you are using the social feed , then you already have the choice of (1) all posts or(2) posts you watch

Sometimes I use the filter, others not. For years my browser link opened to “New” page. No filters. I don’t have time for the games like I once did. Those are off now. But I do enjoy seeing all new posts & threads listed on “New” message board.


The most difficult thing for me to find is old posts. The ones from a few weeks ago. A kind thread / conversation I wanted to add to, read, re-read or follow up. Many final results of repairs or repair services never get posted by the OP. Many will if a follow up inquiry is made. But often I can’t remember the thread tittle or section category.
Alex…, I’ll play “Find that thread for $1000”. …….i go looking over weeks on my activity records.

If you do it so frequently and have so much trouble finding them then you need to add a ‘code word’ to one of your posts in the thread. A random word that you can then search for, though remembering which word was in which thread might be the tricky bit.

Probably; though then that negates the possibility that the code word has also been used by someone else in another thread thus leading to an hour or two of exploring old threads you’d forgotten the existence of with all the amusement that might bring.

Yes I use advanced search if I can remember part of information needed. I didn’t realize there’s a date range setting. Thanks !

This feature is now updated so that you can set your NEW preferences to:

• Include only specified thread prefixes (or)
• Exclude only specified thread prefixes

So you get a lot more control over what you see by default in the NEW posts list.

Still waiting on a fix for content ignore. It may be a long wait as it is a 3rd party developer who may have gone missing.
