Mouthpeices

My dad and I share an alto saxophone and we use the same moutpeice. Should we get a mouthpeice each and if so which one? The sax is chinese no name but a friend of my dad's who owns a music shop got it with the help of someone who knows about saxophones.

I think maybe have one each. A Yamaha 4c mouthpiece suits a lot of beginners and is not too expensive.

Yeh, I've got a Yamaha 4c which has taken me through my first year of playing.

I'd definitely go for one each, and your own reeds each too!

It's just a bit nicer on the old germs. Though unless one of you has a cold or a nasty disease then it won't really matter. there are plenty more germs lying around the house anyway.

I would think that it's a small minimal cost so you might as well. It will be that little bit nicer and the two of you might prefer to play on a different brand reed or strength.

You certainly will build up differences in playing after a few months of progression.

When you buy a mouthpiece (like a Yamaha 4C) do you normally get a ligature with it or should I order one separately?

Hannah's Dad (who often seems to get a cold, so...)

Some come with a ligature, some don't. If I remember rightly my Yamaha 4c for soprano did. A basic lig is pretty cheap anyway.

If you'd like to make a contribution to Pete's charity, bobk (say a tenner), I'll send you the mpc, ligature & cap which came with my Hanson alto; although unlabelled, it's an ESM (quite good German make) and suitable for a beginner.
The ligature is a BG (French).
(A 4c costs about 26 pounds & a BG lig about 12, IIRC.)

I also have for sale a much better-quality Vandoren V5 A25(about 70 squid new!), a *very* good starter mpc, but I'd have to ask for a contribution to 'Roger's Charity'(me!) of GBP25 for that(also with the BG lig, and cap).
that's about what you'd haveta pay for a 4C without lig/cap.

Both are virtually as new.
(And, in the festive spirit, I'll, if you wish, throw in some new, soft reeds (Vandoren #1.2, 2 and/or Java #2, which I've 'grown out of!)

looking at your avatar, I may have worked out why you get all the colds... 😛

Yeh 4c's are good beginner mpcs as said, hope all goes well for you both. Very charitable offer that roger-spreading the xmas spirit, good on ya.
