Tech/maintenance Making parts you can’t find.

With this sample cloth guard in hand. I’m going to pass on making the drawing. Instead I’m going to work directly from the sample for a pattern.
With aluminum foil I have wrapped the piece and smoothed down hard. The smoothing I did with a burnishing tool.

Using the sample as guide (not good to straighten someone’s part)
After :30 of shaping…. remembering not to takeoff too much. Metal deforms as it bends. Better to have some to shave off later on final.

Fwiw, we did consider buying a used part to start with. But what fun is that !!!

I'm watching this with interest because I see applications for using it. Might be able to restore a sax purchased for parts that otherwise had little else wrong with it, but scared off others because they could not see the potential.

My Beaugnier Vito Bari was such a fixer, $315 US shipping included 12 years ago. It's the same one I did Joy to the World with.

I see through the paint, rust, tarnish and crusty bare brass.
Many years ago a hard worker spent their earnings to bring the joy of music home. Maybe just for themselves, or possibly to share with family.
I enjoy making 50, 75, and 100+ year old instruments play again.
Be it the humble bare brass with no pearls or the rich person’s goldplated discarded trash from an estate.
Each earned the purchase. Both dreams of long ago.

Music brings people together,

Small contributions make it possible for everyone to enjoy.
Readers who enjoy my posts. Your friends or family abroad.
Please gift the hat when it comes around. Here on the Café or the next time out and you hear a Busker. A quarter in the jukebox keeps the music alive !

This sax was gifted to me. The picture taken the day received.

My only hope is that someone was encouraged to repair an old Saxophone, and not throw it out.

How many of those most ambitious take to rescuing those viewed as “not worth it” ?

Time for some hammersmith work. The pictures are actually screenshots from a video I took of the process.
I’m using a poly propylene block and a rawhide mallet. Just enough energy transfer to move the metal. No dents.

I’m not the least bit concerned about the deformed area. I need to rotate the part to work the right side and continue forming the leg.

With the major shape formed. It’s now time to roll this edge.

I started the roll with various pliers. Small moves across the span.
Then hammered into final shape. Again screenshots from video.
For a backing anvil I used a mild steel round. About 17mm/ 3/4”.
Hammer is 3oz. Steel ball-peen.
