Late Bloomers Diary

Hello again guys, sorry I haven't posted in a while but been extra busy with kids off school. Now they are at new schools so just settling back into a routine.

Anyway, here is week 6

Had Aussie relatives to visit, so instead of practising, took sax to party. Picture the ensemble - audience, never met before Aussie cousins, Mum and her other UK cousins; my 10 year old son on 'Polly' soprano, my 9 year old niece on flute (recently graded at 3 with merit) and me with 'Eeyore' Alto. Hmmm

First time in front of audience, even if it is only cousins, but as we are all fairly new at it, they were quite tolerant. Mum cried, don't know why...perhaps she thinks I'm playing 'Swing Low' for a particular reason!

Going over basic notes and scales. Managed to play a few more tunes from my song book, and positively trashed 'Swan Lake' Still having fun though.
Friend called by during practice, and has noticed an improvement, so feel more encouraged again.

Will bring week 7 soon, need to snatch some time from somewhere. Happy blowing

Ahh... Swing Low, I was playing that the other night, it's the scales up and down that get me everytime though (eg; Middle D to C, and back again down the scale...My poor brain!)

Don't you get stage fright? I find I can play stuff at home fine, but when I'm standing in the same room as my (very patient) teacher I just can't make the tune! I think I'll have to start playing infront of my parents / boyfriend and build the confidence.

Keep up the good work!

ahhh - stage fright. First time I ever performed anything properly in front of a decent sized audience when i was but a wee nipper (7/8 ish) I played the snowman on piano. ever since I started I learnt pieces from memory (it took so long to learn em by the time I could play it i knew it backwards) so halfway through n i forgot, the whole if you think about it too much thing happened. After a few false starts i broke down and ran off the stage crying! (got the biggest clap of the night mind - but not sure thats a trick I'd advise to adult players to get aplause)

Hi Guys
Sorry again for not keeping you up to date, but new trauma in my life in the form of pending divorce.
Will pick up saxophone again when my head and house are back to normal :w00t:
In the meantime, happy blowing
Tina

Hi Tina,

Sorry to hear of the divorce. In my case and many others " One Door Closes and another opens"

I wasn't around during your earlier Diary postings but enjoyed reading catch up. May it continue.

Hope all goes well.

Hi Tina.

Sorry to hear about your divorce. Can be a very traumatic time. Hope it isn't going too badly for you.

One piece of helpul advice someone gave me when I was going through it...

You thought there was only one way of living your life and now that's come to an end, but there's a million ways of living a life. Now you get a chance to design another one.

I've had two of them and I have to say its a process towards something better, whether you realise it at the time or not. Good luck, best wishes and we look forward to your contributions to the forum as soon as you feel up to it.

Hi, Tina. Sorry to hear about your impending divorce. It's difficult to know what to say without it sounding like a cliche, especially a I've never been there, but I hope it's as amicable as it can be in the circumstances.

I hope you have plenty of support around you, and people to talk with if you need to.

Keep blowin' girl!!

Cheers, Bob

Hey there Tina,

Really sorry to hear about the divorce. I've only been on the receiving end as one of the children but I remember it being rough.

Keep your chin up and I wish you strength and support to get through it.

Hi Tina, nice diary, sounds like you're progressing great!

My mums twice divorced. I was two the first time and have no memories at all of anything prior. The second time was just over a year ago (16) and the advice I'd like to give you to is to be completely honest with your children but obviously on a level that they can understand.
It does work out better in the end, and you'll probably notice how mature your children really are! We can be surprisingly clever... on the odd occasion 😛

Do keep blowing, you may find as it's something you enjoy and you have a passion for it. It's a bit of a release, a break. Certainly gets me away from the school work etc. Maybe a bit too often though 😛

Dear All
I've just found this site surfing the net looking for things saxophone and I'd love to read Tina's late bloomers diary....Im 43 now and the only thing i know about the sax is I love the sound of it!! have always done so but really got hooked when I heard Gery Reffertys' "Baker Street" about 20 odd years ago!! Often go to the Spice pub in London on a Tuesday when it's blues night as there is one exceptionally good sax player there sometimes. I don't even have a sax, don't know if I could afford one ( am single parent ) and trying to find a teacher within a reasonable distance - no pressure then!! 🙂 I look forward to hearing Tina's and everyone elses trials and tribulations on their learning journeys....oh yes did I also mention that I can't read music either?!?! 🙁

Ooopppssss....just read all the posts now and sympathies to Tina. Have had one divorce, though at my instigation, and yes we have children but I think we have all finally got through the other side, as Tina will. It's not an easy process to go through but you'll get there. Hope to read your posts again soon. Mags xx

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
