Fantastic technique and huge sound. There's a story that Tubby Hayes came to America convinced he was the fastest tenor on the planet and then heard Griffin and cried..

Tubby and Griff loved one another, and their respect was mutual. Griffin was overjoyed when he and Tubbs were booked together at the Molde Jazz Festival in Norway in February 1973. It was to be the last time the two men would play together, as Hayes died a few months later.
They had previously jammed together in London and also when Tubby had played in Vienna in 1969 with the Kenny Clarke/Francy Boland Big Band, as a "dep" for Ronnie Scott.
