It's arrived!!!!

Hi Linky,

I had heard that the recorder was harder to play than the sax, so I'm hoping it'll be easier when I finally get the sax!!

I'm going through a kids instruction book at the moment. Introducing a note at a time with lots of tunes, so I am getting a head start on reading the music too. The book doesn't have scales in it, but I've printed one off from the internet, and will try and learn some others too.

That's a good point Bob - I'll try that!!! 🙂

keeping a recorder in tune is a sisyphan task.

its incredibly good ear training if you can play it along with anything else and not sound out. i play my sister's tenor recorder from time to time, which to me is much more natural and controllable.

A friend of mine lent me a tenor recorder, and although it sounds nicer than the descant, I couldn' t get on with playing it, especially the notes involving the right hand!!!

I don't really want to get bogged down trying to learn how to play the recorder, so I've returned the tenor to concentrate on learning music with the descant until I get the sax.

I used to play bass recorder in my primary school's recorder orchestra (It was one of these fancy 'private schools')

They actually have a really nice bottom octave, though the next one is really hard work to get sounding nice.
It was about as big as me then when sitting down as I was 7ish and small for my age. You can get your hands round a tenor. It's worth it.

much as theres a part of the teenage me inside that wants to get all class-war on your ass, linky, the image of a tiny child with a huge recorder is just too amusing

i totally sucked at recorder when i was in school because i was beginning clarinet at the same time and the different sets of fingerings were too contradictory. coming back to it with years of sax playing under my fingers i now just get frustrated when i forget all the "extra" fingers you need to get it in tune. (and i would kill for a g# key)

sorry for hijacking the thread nick
