Hey Guys,

Just thought I'd share my new tenor sax purchase with you. Got a second hand P Mauriat delivered from US for just $1,750!

Made in 2003 I think. Needed a good clean, clean and oil when I got it as played a lot and never serviced. Few errors in setup also but now all sorted, clean and now playing great (bit tricky to reassemble, sorry to admit but had to get wife to help :-(). It really does look awesome! To be fair, it's not a massive difference in sound to my YTS 32, and I could survive well without it, but just wanted to get a slightly more dark, smokey jazz sound, which this seems to have. Also it seems a tad louder / thicker in places but most people could probably hardly tell the difference in sound. Came with 2 necks also - original and Super Jazz IV.

P.S. just had a good play along to some backing tracks and lovin it! Goes up to 11 when you need it to!

It would be worth getting for looks alone, see pics from seller: http://s1200.photobucket.com/albums/bb332/Todd_Sneeringer/P%20Mauriat%20PXMT%2066R%20Tenor/

Really looks the part for jazz etc. Looking forward to playing more - sounds files to follow shortly 🙂...

Same horn as I've been blowing for the last 5 years.... great piece of kit! A really rich tone you can do a lot with &, of course, it goes up to 11 🙂

Nice looking sax, similar finish to my selmer...people say the Magnum neck really makes a big difference to this sax...i think Pete did a review on it some were.

Great! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do my Mauriat 67 alto vintage laquer. My sax ensemble leader says he can tell my tone from the others if he's not in the room when we warm up.

Yes- I've tried both, the Magnum makes everything brighter and edgier... to me it makes a Maurait (big, boomy, a bit retro) sound like a modern horn (Yamaha or Yanagisawa). Interesting for a change but always thought it short circuits whats cool about 66Rs in the first place.....

Cheers Jules, that's kinda what I was thinking 🙂

It's a reference to Marshal amps, all rock god guitarists use them and the joke is it's the only amp to have 11 on the volume switch as opposed to 10 on all other amps!

goes one notch louder than all the other saxes 🙂 Loving the original neck more than the Super Jazz IV one now (still very little difference)! Anyone want to buy a Tenor Super Jazz IV neck? Will put on ebay in a couple of weeks I think...

Great horn you got there,BIG,BEEFY,LOUD AND DARK.I had a Magnum neck a while.I liked it more than the stock neck.Atad more of everything for me.Great for loud gigs. Its brighter but the 66r is so dark a horn it can handle it.The stock neck is superb but having 2 is better, more gear rules.

Mmm lovely. I bought a Mauriat last year (although not this exact model) and everyone commented on the difference in sound. Hadn't thought about a different neck though, could be my next thing. Got a bronze neck for Yani when I first had that and liked the difference that made (don't think it was just in my head!) Jules, are you going to use that motto in the shop, stuck on a poster? Tho people like me don't need any encouragement at all! Went into the Denmark St shop couple of months ago for a box of reeds and came out with a new mouthpiece. Best one I ever bought.

I got a Custom Ceramic Drake size 8 the other week for my alto - nice big sound over whole range with a bit of edge, anyone else tried them? Happy with my custom tenor one also.

Finding the palm keys a bit annoying and difficult as I keep hitting the Eb palm when going for D3 - have tried bending them a bit but does not help: seems that Eb protrudes too far (it is too high)? Anyone got any ways to rectify this?

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
