IOTM IOTM APRIL-2014-S.O.S.

Impro of the month
It's strange that what comes out has no relation to how it felt to play. I wasn't relaxed, It was a roller coaster ride or maybe the wild mouse. The beat just whisked me along. I was pleasantly surprised when I thought I'd dropped it and was hanging around waiting for something to give me a sign how to get back in, when the whole thing repeated and sucked me in again. It's a very clever piece, the way it flows from start to finish with twists and turns that don't go where you're expecting.

The quick changes in the middle leave little time for thinking and then the eight bar sections of the same chord give you nowhere and everywhere with the challenge to keep it interesting. It's a fascinating contrast. Hence the S.O.S. Gawd'elpus.

What's the tempo 240/250 bpm? A bar a second. That's pretty quick.

Some really good versions being posted, you didn't murder the slower one Ivan, if you find the head awkward then just alter it. It's not set in stone, it was just something to play with. Colin the tempo on the quick one is up around 240, so says BiaB anyway, glad you seem to like it and are having some fun with it. Got to single Nick out after that fast version, it was really good:thumb:

Chris..

I don't get it

If it really was 240 beats to the minute wouldn't we get the changes at twice the speed they're actually at? Simply counting one-two-three-four with the underlying beat, bars, chord changes, the head or whatever and I get half what the computer says. I get that fact the drum and bass are on amphetamines but the piano seems to understand my point

I'd put in a scratching head emoticon if I did emoticons

Just for information, you can calculate the tempo in Transcribe! too. Put a marker in for the start of a few beats or bars (for the latter tap m during playback). There's a "compute tempo" option on the "markers" menu Multiply by 4 or whatever if you're marking bars.

The sheet music for the fast and slow versions is different. A crotchet on the slow sheet corresponds to a minim on the fast. So the fast version starts with 8 bars of C minor and the slow with 4. The fast track is indeed about 240bpm. The bass is playing crotchets.

Sorry Chris I murdered your version

I found the head awkward in Eb

I won't upload soprano version... even less fit for human consumption than the above

Actually two great versions! The alto one sounds a bit Kenny Garrettish...

This is the very point of this IOTM. Try to improvise thinking half or double tempo on both versions. It would relaxed your fast playing and spice up your bossa phrasing.
