When is the right time to take a grade, should you aim to get a distinction at grade 1, or with a bit of more work get a pass at grade 3?

Seriously I guess it depends on your reasons for taking the exam

Whatever turns you on.
The point of doing grades is presumably to provide extra motivation and measure progress. I think it's up to you how you do that.

My motivation is probably to measure progress so I would either be great at grade one or mediocre at grade 3. Maybe taking grade 3 is better as I have something to work on. On the other hand a distinction at grade 1 would tell me my basi

Took my grade 1 jazz sax with Trinity last month and got a distinction. Very pleased. Looking forward to doing grade 3 next year!
