I wonder if it's possible to express musical scales as Taylor series? Perhaps we need a new thread... Must be careful, we may get contributions from people who know what they're talking about. There's at least one mathematician on the forum.

You're right, we could represent points on the scale as Taylor series, but the scales would not work that way. Fourier yes.

back in an earlier life, when I was doing an OU course, we were looking at Fourier series. One of my course colleagues could not understand that by adding odd-harmonic Sine waves you could get to a square wave, so I drew the whole thing out and explained it. This resulted in our tutor contacting me to ask me if I'd like to become a tutor.
Life was hectic at the time, and I didn't take him up on his offer. Maybe now I should? 🙂))

The further your mouthpiece is up the scale, the harder you are considered to be.

The PPT features on the "Dai Bostik scale of Tonal Concepts" and was not considered an appropriate mouthpiece for the Hardness scale, which was defined some time previously, and features more widely available commercial models.

You can draw nice pictures of how that works with software like Mathemtaica these days (didn't have it when I were a lad...). You get cute little overshoots near the corners which don't get any shorter, they just get narrower as the series converges. It's probably best not to encourage me on this sort of topic; I can get very boring very quickly.

As for the tutoring, why not? I enquired about doing some myself at one point and was told that uptake was low and I should apply to teach computing. Yuck!
