Here's 8 bars, come up with your solo!

Just thought I'd put this up here, as I quite like it and someone may want to develop it. It's only 8 bars at the moment.

Click on it for a readable version. Unless your eyesight is amazing!

Note: The Bb is nice if you bend up to it.

Hi Linky - I like the first four bars... good rhythm motif too. Perhaps the last four could go Fm7|Ab7|Am7b5 D7b9|G C7+ to turn it into an 8 bar turnaround? Maybe a key sig of F / Dm might make reading all those naturals avoidable.

yeah it works quite well as a 'middle 8' or turnaround if you were to alter some of the chords like you suggested Simon.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by the timing is out on the last bit? do you mean the dotted quaver rest is too long? It all seems to add up to 4 beats for me.

I was thinking of taking some rhythmic ideas and melodic ideas from the 3rd and fourth bars as the motif and trying to come up with something from there for the head section.

it adds up to 8 beats, but it looks horrible

a 4/4 bar should almost always be written so its divisible in half

and in most circumstances groups of quavers and smaller should be written so you can divide up the beats

you might think your bar would be harder to read with the amount of tied notes this would entail, but working out the note placement would actually be much easier - so i would have made that F 2 semiquavers tied together the second of which beamed to a semiquaver D tied to a dotted crotchet (of course theres the option of double dotting the D but thats rarely seen and easy to misread)

I see what you mean PhilthD. I find my way easier, I'm sure you find your way easier too. The thing with notation is that it can be written in different ways. Feel free to re-write it if you use it 😛

Good idea Simon! I'll get working on mine and post it up now that all my exams are over and done with! Screaming 'yes!' in my head to hide the nerves of the looming results day.

Er, Linky.. seriously mate, the last bar will not get you a pass. Should be this:

Yeah, let's hear from all those who own all that expensive recording equipment... what about all those 'Eridol and H4 Zoom owners'... 😉

Simon

I started my solo last night. I'll tweak it today (maybe now) and see where it goes.

Give it a go David! It only has to be as difficult as you make it!

Take the standard 12 bar blues in F chords and give it a go. Try copying a rhythm that you like from the 8 bars and using it as a theme.

Great stuff Linky.

But it would be better if you made your images not quite so wide, ie fewer bars per line. is that possible? That way they would display much better on the forum (images get automatically reduced to 550 px wided)

Yeah, I can edit them in Paint, that wonderful bit of software 😛 (did you realise that if you click it you get a full size version open up in a new window?)

It does indeed look a bit manic. But it works all right. I'm not 100% on it. It was just a quick go in the morning. Maybe I'll go through it sometime soon and tweak it to make it more concise and predictable. I've never composed in this style of jazz before, it's usually blues, RnB and rock n roll things as that's what I have to do with the band I play in. You only become a better composer/improviser via practise though!

Lets have some input from some others. Please.

Yeah... where are all the others ?? Holidays ??
Also Linky - where's the audio man? You got one of those H4 zoom / edirol things haven't yer?

I'm afraid I don't.
I use my laptop, but it won't even boot up at the moment as my brother managed to download a program with a virus in it.

I'm investing in a Mac though, so when I get that I'll be experimenting with the new software etc. anyway.
