Got me a new Mp

I just bought a new mouthpice for my Alto (which I should get soon).

I got a handmade one from www.springermpc.com

has anyonce else ever herd of these?

No, do right a review when you've given it some time to settle in.

I assume it's ebonite, what kind of lay and tip opening did you go for? how much did it cost? what is the sound you are going after with it?

I like the sounds of the RPC's pete is currently using, and I'm thinking of getting one to go on the Martin alto, they're just a bit pricey. These might be a good substitute.

I may even get two, one for the Tenor, since that is going to be upgraded from the un-branded mouth-hell it was supplied with.

Linky, if you really can't stand your tenor mpc any longer, the cheapest playable ok-sounding tide-you-over piece would, in my limited experience, be a Rico Royal. At about 20 quid, they're nit bad at all.

Jambo, where are springermpc based? When you say it's hand made, do you mean it was handmade and you bought it, or it was customised to your spec, or hand-finished? If you see what I mean....

They are completely hand made and finished (hard rubber) by a guy in the US.

They cost $100 (approx 50 quid). If you ask me, thats a dam good deal. Most bulk machine made mouthpieces are more expensive than that.

Linky, I wanted a motuhpiece that is versitile... able to play smooth, soft ballads (I play in my church you see), but also able to rock it up a bit. The Alto come in tip openings of 75,80,85,90. I went for 80. I figured this was a safe bet as it yould be open enough for bending, but not to hard to control.

I've followed a link to the Springer mouthpiece site from the SOTW forum. Seems to have nice enough articles and knows what he's doing. Please let us know the details of the piece (tip opening, ligature you're using and reeds) and obviously how it plays.

I jsut e-mailed him and asked wether he could make an exception. He was happy to, but if its over seas, you dont have the option of sending it back and get a re-fund.

My logic was, if I really dont like it, i can sell it on.

Must be the season for people purchasing new mouthpieces. My Vandoren Jumbo Java A35 arrived yesterday (08/01/2007) from the UK. Posted 03/01/2007 not bad going. Because of the kerfuffle last month of sending me a V5 A35 incorrectly, sax.co.uk gave me a box of reeds, Vandoren ZZ 3s and also a brass ligature and a mouthpiece patch/cushion.
I will continue evaluating the mouthpiece this coming week. Played it last night for the first time, appears to be slightly louder than my old Meyer 5M but I wouldn't say brighter as such. I would like to compare it against say a metal alto piece like a Brilhart Levelaire or a Beechler to see what is brighter, etc.
Has anybody done this and what is their comments/opinions etc.

I've used a Jumbo Java on my tenor, I was advised to try one as a cheaper alternative to a metal mpc. I don't have a metal mpc to compare it with but it's certainly louder and brighter than my Selmer Soloist, and is quite easy to get on with. It will be useful if I ever have to compete with loud guitars, or play r'n'b etc, but I still prefer the sound of my Selmer.
