Slow blues called "Hittin' the Jug" on theJazz tonight, by Gene Ammons. There're two or three choruses before he comes in, but it's well worth the wait - I don't know if this is his regular style, but he resists the temptation to play flurries of double-double time phrases, and takes mostly a nice slow approach, with plenty of spaces and a lovely fat tone. From a recording point of view, the reverb on the horn is quite astonishing, the decay from the last note probably ended after they'd packed up the drums and left the studio. Wonderful stuff, mellow yet uplifting.
