I have, as suggested by the aforementioned document, attempted this very day to contact said manufacturer of my "Martin" Saxophone instrument for a recommendation of a good brand of reed.

Distressingly, I am advised by the postmaster of Lake Elkhart that the said chap is no longer in residence.

I'm somewhat ruffled by this and really do wish to avoid the sheer folly of playing with a reed that is not suitable. I imagine my warranty may even be invalidated should I attempt such action.

Mr Thomas esq., how do you propose I proceed as my enjoyment is rather impaired until such time as this situation can be adequately rectified.

I look to you to attach further documents advising the appropriate course of action a man should take...

Although this land known more recently as Australia surley is a considerable distance. Ones willingness to secure the employment of the correct reed aparatus should never be dampened by mere geographical distance.

I have it on good advice from many learned and much experienced instrumentalists that a company known as "Reeds Australia" have a fine selection, the choice of which is only rivalled by the finest of french wines and cuban cigars.

I encourage you therefore, my dear fellows, not to waver from your search until a reputable retailer who is wise enough to stock their shelves has been found and your procurement of these fine reeds has indeed been guaranteed to you.

How does one measure 33 1/3 degrees? I need to get my mouthpiece right.

one simply need imagine a circle, and divide into 10.8 equal sections

Note that it only says about 33 1/3 . One presumes that 33 1/4 might still be convenient.

Note also that it states "so that the mouthpiece may be inserted CONVENIENTLY between the lips."

So one would assume that the angle of degrees is possibly not as important or to take precedence over the convenience of the insertion of the mouthpiece.

I would recommend against any angle that involves inserting the mouthpiece inconveniently between the lips. I'm sure Mr Eby has experienced such inconvenience, hence his terribly sensible advice to avoid the same.

Mr philthD, I think we are in agreement on that one.

Mr Thomas, please accept my thanks for your very kind reassurance that the position of the mouthpiece need not be as precise as I had at first feared.

I can now adjust my mouthpiece with an easy mind.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Sadly it is proving rather difficult following the illustrious Mr. Eby's instructions regarding the fitting and angle of the mouthpiece. When the mouthpiece is fitted at his recommended angle, my mouth is no longer horizontal.
Faced with the prospect of giving up playing the saxophone, I consulted my plastic surgeon who has arranged to alter my lower and upper jaws to comply with Mr. Eby's recommendation.

I disagree Old Chap. This action indeed moves the Bend of the Instrument further from the right hip. If the position is compensated for by moving ones head, Ones posture is slightly UFF!

Well, I rather feel that herien lies the very reason that Mr Eby failed to corner the market in saxophone tutoring. He is very specific with regard to many instructions and then leaves his pupils with some wishy-washy notion of "about 33 1/3 degrees".

I contend it either is or is not that stated angle, and from here on the reader must have doubt as to the validity of any further pronouncement. Are they "accurate" instructions or "about". Not good enough, I fear.

But for a small amount of effort to retain the highest standards, we could all now be contributing to Mr Eby's Pantry, rather than Mr Thomas's Breakfastroom.

Think yourself lucky Mr. Thomas esq. that, thanks to Mr Eby's unfortunate, and rather unusual, lack of rigour, you have been provided with such an open goal in establishing ones own endeavours...
