Conn rolled tone holes transplant (Is Griff about?)

This is probably a silly question but here goes.
I am refurbishing a Kalashan c mel, conn stencil, which is in very good condition, I also have a straight neck conn which is beyond redemption. Would it be possible to remove the rolled tone hole mounts, I believe there soldered on, and put them on the stencil and if so would lead solder do the job?
I also have some conn parts for sale/trade if anyone needs anything. not the neck, so contact me if interested.

Hi Paul

When you say "mounts" do you mean the whole tone hole "chimney" or just the rolled ring at the top?.

Anything is possible of course and as for solder I had an old couesnon tenor that had its chimneys soldered with soft (lead) solder. I am not aware of the rolled edges just being soldered on.

You could if you were patient and had plenty of time, and if your existing tone holes are in good nick, make rings from brass rod and then solder them onto the existing chimneys using soft solder. Either way I would make sure that any key posts/ straps and chimneys are securely wired/clamped down so that they do not get a chance to move out of position when their solder melts as you do your soldering on the instrument.

If you go onto www.saxontheweb.net and do a search for soldered rolled tone holes you may find more info there.

Good luck.
