Christmas Ensemble

[color:green]My teacher had her Christmas ensemble for all her adult students last night - and very enjoyable it was too.

There were 5 of us and she had music for carols to play with parts for 4 saxes. Now, I've been practising carols for the past couple of months so thought I'd be ok. BUT - they were in a different key and the different parts were not always the main tune so it was much harder than I'd thought.

We were all of a similar standard though and had a lot of fun!!! (And a few drinks too!!!!) It was good to meet the other students and play along with them. I'll look forward to the next one!!! (I think she's going to give us the music beforehand then, so we can practise!!!)

Our director is also a member of his (rather good) church choir, so we get to play concerts at the church two or three times a year. For the past couple of years we've done one on the Wednesday before Christmas, and it's turning into a bit of a tradition. This year we played 'Shepherd's Farewell', accompanied by the choir. Not only was the choir master directing the whole thing on the night (because our man was singing), but we hadn't rehearsed with him or the choir at all. As they say, we did it cold! Wonder of wonders, it worked.

At the end of the night, we played 'Oh Come All Ye Faithful' - band, choir, congregation and (another first for us) organ. Sounded great.

[color:green]That sounds brilliant [color:red]redbottom[color:green]. The church my wife goes to has a band which was playing at the recent carol service. When I'm a bit better, I might get in touch to see if they need a saxophonist!!

Well, there's always a place with our lot for anyone in the Leicester/Loughborough area. One more person in one more band is always a good thing.

Interestingly enough, I've been chatting to someone in one of my writers' forums who plays the sax (yes, I have sent him/her a link here). What we're both trying to get across to the person who started the thread, asking what they could take up for a hobby, is that music is actually fun. Even at our level, we can go out, have a laugh (great hilarity this week over the director's tale of a red bra in a tree 8| ) and socialise and even raise a little money for charity. The perfect antidote to work stress.

By the way, here's a link to three recordings our band made a couple of Christmases ago:

Be interesting to know what people think.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
