Hi,
referring to the lip in - lip out thread I played around a bit with lip completely out and where I'm normally (lip slightly in). It's a slight difference, and that's why I prefer lip in (and teach it this way). Starting with lip out.

Unscientific. You are not equally trained in both approaches. Someone with different physiogomy may well obtain opposite results. 1 subject is insufficient number. I could go on.

At best it is misleading propaganda by those who believe in the lip-in-only God.

Personally I believe sax attracts people who like to do their own thing. If it sounds good, I don't care how it's achieved.

There's a nice live album called "Baritone Explosion Live at Nick's" which features the baritone playing of Ronnie Cuber and Nick Brignola. One of the tracks is a fine one chorus version of "What's New ?" and although the soloist isn't identified, I am pretty sure it is Ronnie Cuber. I transcribed that solo and then butchered an Aebersold backing track of the right key and tempo to make my recording.

PS Interestingly (or not) I found that the tempo of the Aebersold backing track is different to that marked in the book, different to the count in and slows down noticeably over the first chorus which is what I used. The piano and bass were quite nice though.

Here's my attempt with the "strings" backing track. I managed to produce some pretty awkward phrases! Never mind...

I've done another recording with the strings backing track, as arranged by Neal Hefti for Clifford Brown with Strings. Clifford had such a lovely tone and great taste - that album is well worth listening to.

I transcribed Clifford's solo and as I don't play trumpet I played it on my soprano. The first note is a written low A so I played a low Bb and then got Audacity to change the pitch down by a semitone.

I wanted to do the full set of SATB before the end of the month, so here I am playing my tenor with a Dexter Gordon transcription and an Aebersold backing track that sort of matches for key and tempo, at least until the ending.

From Curtis Swift of Saxsolos.com has this Dexter solo (and many more). He does good work and the prices are reasonable.

Is it Dexter's time feel that is driving you bonkers ? He certainly pulls the time around in places and the transcription only goes so far in trying to capture that.

Yes - sometimes there is no way to fit all the notes into a normal bar. I don't know how the rhythm section coped, but they clearly did.
