Very difficult, for me at least. But then I only really started doing that last month, before that I just played along to the notes on paper, speeding up in the easy bits, slowing down in the hard bits.

I know everyone is always disappointed in their progress, but other than being impatient, I'm quite happy that things are gradually coming together and improving...at least on the tenor, that sop is another story 🙂
 
This one is aimed at guys that find it hard reading, playing, keeping in time/tune, fingering the right notes all at the same time. Seeing how most of the BOTM's use the same backing track, just use one of the versions posted by one of the members that can play well and that you like and just play along with them. If more than one chorus is to much, DON'T do it just play the head once and stop.🙂 Cut the backing in half, mix, export and post.🙂

You could even put the original backing mp3 and the posted guide track in your daw of choice and record yourself playing along, then just mute the guide track and export. The more you play along the more at ease you will become,
your ear will develop etc etc. Is it cheating NO just another tool to use to improve your playing.🙂

Just remember the levels of the two tracks will have to be reduced as the output will put your DAW in the RED:w00t:

I'm going to be really cheeky and ask a huge favour of Chris - is there any chance you could export a version that's a whole tone down, please? I'm playing along to Dexter and I'd really like to record in the same key he played the song in.

Obviously you have a real life so if you don't have the time or inclination, please don't worry about it. :thumb:
 
Ok, I have some questions for the more experienced members on this. So, the backing track, goes C, C/G, G, G7sus, then it changes to CMaj7...F7 in bar 5. I'm pretty sure it's playing the CMaj7 on beat 1, nothing on beat 2 and then the F7 on beat 3, then a single note on beat 4 (an F? or a 7?, it sounds 'the same' as the chord to me, but 'thinner', so I'm assuming it's the F).

So if that is correct, I have a few questions (if it isn't, then I guess I just need to start again 🙂)

Question 1. Do you know that it's CMaj7...F7? I obviously hear that it's a different from the previous chords, and that the chord on beat 4 is different, but should I know that it's CMaj7 and F7?

Question 2. When we get to chord 12...are you still there? Like, oh year, that's a F#m7b5 followed by a B7b9?...at the time it's played?

3...no, that will do for now 🙂 I'll go play and see if I can keep in time for longer than 5 bars this time 🙂

this ballad begins AMaj7F#m7|Bm7 Bb9#11 and bar 5 has C#m7 Cm7 and bar 12 has A E7 on the Bb sheet
and DM7 Bm7|Em7 Eb9#11 bar5 F#m7 Fm7 and bar 12 D A7 on the Eb sheet🙂

As a broad answer, with a jazz ballad you probably won't find the keys player playing a full two handed chords on each beat, plus not many full two handed chords, chord voicing is down to a pianists taste and style of playing.
They might play an open voicing on the first chord using only a few notes over both hands and when the chord changes they might play a key note of the new chord, also these charts don't always show changes when the first chord is for 3 beats and the 2nd chord is on the 4th.

I know that when @aldevis and myself did a tune for the iotm we found just playing 3rd and 7th played on beat 1 or 3 depending on the changes was very easy to follow for the guys that took part. Easier than a full in your face swinging keys part🙂


Most jazz tunes boil down to iim7,V7,IM7 with substitutions and key changes 🙂

I think it's the second sheet you (or was it Al?) put up. It has the 'intro' then after chord 9 I think it goes into the bit you say. (Bb)

But I guess it doesn't matter so much what actual chords I'm talking about, I was more trying to get whether I should know what is being played, i.e. I can hear that C is different to G, and to some extent I can hear that G7sus is different to G. My question is should I know what they are when I hear them? So if I'm playing along, should I be able to start at any point and say 'yeah, we're here...because that's a F#7b5?. In fact forget the 7b5 for a bit. If the chord goes G, C, F say. do you know that it's G,C, F or just that the chords have changed?
 
@Tiberius the fact you can hear the changes is a big plus in your sax playing development.🙂

The top line is you should be able tell what a chord is when you hear it played, that would be ideal and not something everyone can get even near:w00t::confused:😱

There are lots of other steps on the ladder between that and the bottom. How far you want/need to go depends on what you want to get out of your playing. Plus the style of music you play🙂

If you are content reading sheet music and knowing what is going on eg how the chords are built etc and can improvise from that point then that's good place to be at.🙂

If you want to perform with no sheet in front of you then you are going to have to learn the songs you play, eg, what the chord changes are and the melody. Plus know what you can play to improvise over them. A lot of what you need to know depends on the style of music you want to play. 🙂

Some basic theory is a key requirement to get things moving, as you develop then you can learn more as you need it.🙂

Having just downloaded a new spring reverb plug-in for Reaper, I thought I'd record a little something to see what it sounded like. As I've been learning Dexter's version of the opening section of this song, I thought I'd take Chris' original backing track, detune it down a tone and have a quick blast to it to see how the plug sounded.

I don't normally record improvisations and certainly never post them but this came out rather better than I had any idea it could. This was my first attempt at playing the opening melody to Chris' backing track and the first time I'd tried to solo over the chords at all, having not even got that far while playing to Dexter's version on Go. You can even hear me pause as I decide whether or not to carry on playing. 😀

I am utterly gobsmacked that I managed to improvise anything remotely musical at all. And very happy.

As Chris has just sent me a properly transposed version, I'll be having a go at recording a properly rehearsed version next.

It's taken quite a while to get my ear around this one. I couldn't hear the tune while listening but it started to come while playing it from the dots.

I'd tried it earlier but was quite disappointed with the results. Listening back a few days later and it doesn't seem so bad.
