I've looked through this thread and found my favourite tenor player missing. One of the most consistently good BIG TEXANS, started in R&B, played with Mingus and was influenced by Dexter Gordon and JC himself. My favourite album: 'The Song Book', but everyone including the posthumously produced 'Blues For You' track
(1965 Berlin Festival), grips you for over 27 minutes. That's tenor playing!!
I rest my case.

More catching up here - yup, Booker Ervin is good, and a great contrast to Eric Dolphy in one of the Mingus bands. Come to think of it, any Mingus from the second half of the 50's is pretty fantastic, special mention for Jimmy Knepper's tromboning.
