Best Sax Book for a Train Journey

About to take a five hour train journey next week - a few days at a conference.

What book should I buy to take with me? I just know I'm going to get sax withdrawal symptoms but figure that I could maybe use the time well by reading up on some music theory etc.

(tempted to take my alto and just noodle on the train or spend two days solid practice and skip the conference - but I suspect I wouldn't get away with it ..... )

I like the look of the book "Jazzology" which I know Simon recommended in another post. Any other suggestions?

If it's jazz-related fiction you want try '12-bar Blues' by, umm, ooh, I can't remember, but it's the story of a hot jazz trumpeter in the 20's and really gives a feel of what it must have been like back then.

Also, I've heard that Mingus wrote a book which I should think is worth investigating.

if you've never read tirro's jazz history a long train journey would seem like a good oportunity - but make sure you get a table cos its kinda chunky

The Mingus booked is called 'Beneath the Underdog'. It's semi-autobiographical, a great book.

The Bear Comes Home - Rafi Zabor (A really interesting story about a jazz playing bear. Sounds naff, but is absolutely brilliant)

What a great marketing strategy, just make something so random people will buy it just to see what it's all about!

Check out the reviews on amazon. I picked it up in a bargain bin somewhere for a couple of quid and it became one of those books you foist on other people because it's such a good read 😱)

Definitely second that. I was trying to find my copy to rewho the author was.
