BIAB easily plays the wrong notes on this. Make sure you disable the "embelish chords" function.
maj7 chords could play better as 6.

Listen to the piano solo on the original recording (John C), and you will realize that we are not alone in getting confused.

@Nick Wyver version is probably the most horizontal so far.

I didn't play an endless stream of arpeggios (a la Coltrane - vertical playing) but took a more melodic or scalic approach (horizontal). The usual examples trotted out are Lester Young - horizontal and Coleman Hawkins - vertical.

Coltrane plays 1235 on every chord.
My aim is developing melodic ideas that float on the changing harmony.
Nick's spoof of songbird is a perfect extreme example.

I liked it a lot Colin 😎- isn't it tough getting round those awkward key shifts all the time. It reminds me of the dodgem/bumber cars at the fair. Go get going in one direction for a bit and then suddenly get hit and have to go in another direction!! 🙂

I've spent most of the afternoon listening over and over to all of your recordings and must say hats off to those who have posted. Liked all of them very much. I've been studying the chord progressions and trying to make sense of what's going on and my head is fit to burst. I've read and re-read all the posts then listened again and I'm still no wiser. Anyway I'm going for a large glass of wine now with friends and I'll come back to this tomorrow. I expect all to become clear overnight (in my dreams). Have a happy Friday evening one and all 🙂

I don't think at the level of theory I'm at I could make sense of it on paper. The only way for me is to play it and see where it takes me. I'm sure it's going to take every player a different way to a different place. Get the chords under your fingers one at a time and launch when you have them. My recording was my umpteenth attempt and before that I must have run through it a 100 times.

It's a frustrating, difficult piece to play but rewarding when it starts to come together.

My approach was to compose while playing because I find it frustrating to compose something on paper and then have to change it because I can't play it. The only problem with that is I forget how it goes.

Umm? Actually, thinking about it, does the absence of readily discernible arpeggios make it horizontal by default? A sort of non-flat horizontal.
