Go rental and then ask your tutor. Get informed!

If you are in York phone Gear4Music and ask if they can arrange a number of saxes for you to have a blow on at their York outlet shop. I've been twice. As a newbie though you won't know enough to know which to pick. Hence the renting one first for a while might be your best bet. Some places will give you your rental costs off if you decide to buy and may also throw in a first lesson free. I don't think Gear4Music do those options but people on here may well be able to advise you of outlets that do.

Rent for a while then once you have more feel for it go to a few shops and try out some different horns. You may need a better mouthpiece than whatever comes as standard with a sax (new or second hand).

Lots of useful advice. Grab the offer to try out from a forumite - that'll be worth days of web searching. If still unsure, I'd find a teacher willing to have a try-out session with you, then try the rental route until you're settled.

We've all had this problem. I went for a Bauhaus Walstein AS-Y for £517 from sax.co.uk I bought it because i thought if i didnt like it, ill get more of my money back than buying a cheap £200 student one and then not being able sell it and lose all of my money. It turns out i love it. Great saxophone. I did change mouthpiece to a Yamaha though and noticed a nice difference. But it's not necessary.
