whos nicked my notes????

Hi,
Downloaded some music from Petes site(when the saints). As I cant sight read music I painstakingly looked up and wrote the notes and have just tried to play when.....
If I read it right it is all in # but I cant see B#,A# or D# on any fingering charts and have scratched my head so much I now have splinters.
Any idea where I can find these keys before I alert Interpol???

Hi Delboy, I don't want to presume that you know less than you actually do, but...

B# is the same as C, A# is the same as Bb, and D# is the same as Eb.

This at least is true in terms of fingering the notes on a saxophone. However, these notes, although they have the same pitch, are known as a sharp or flat depending on the key of the piece of music. For instance, the note Bb appears in keys, or scales such as Bb, F, Eb major, etc. But, the same note would be called A# if it occured in the keys or scales of, say, A#, B or F# major etc.

For those who are far more advanced in musical theory, there are headache-inducing complex reasons why B# is in fact a different note from C, A# is different from Bb, etc.

There, that's cleared that up then

Cheers, Bob

I may have to defer to Pete or someone else on this one, as I'm not familiar with his DVD. But I imagine it's in an easy key, like C (no sharp/flat symbols on the stave after the clef), G (one sharp, F#, on the stave after the clef), maybe F (one flat, Bb), or even D (two sharps, F# and C#)

The notes you need, to play 'When the Saints', are the first five notes in the major scale of whatever key the tune is written in e.g. C D E F G in C; G A B C D in G; F G A Bb C in F; D E F# G A in D.

So, the order of the notes (ignoring the timing) to play the tune would be C E F G, C E F G, C E F G E C E D, E E D C E G G F, F E F G E C D C. This is if you are in C.

I could go further, but I won't in case it's going counter to how Pete is putting it across in his DVD.

I hope you can make sense of it.

Cheers, Bob

On the DVD Pete plays it in G. The notes being G A B C & D. Haven't seen the music for it on this site - anyone know where it is?

Hi delboy
I think what may be confusing you . . . Seems to me you're reading the alto notes and misinterpreting somewhat.
It's not all in "sharp", the # sign on the top line refers to the note that belongs to that particular line, which in this case is F - therefore ALL F's are played as F# - what it also tells us is that the piece is written in the key of G Major, which requires a half tone interval between the 7th and 8th notes. Just see if that helps you any. - gruss - spike

Thanks for all your help guys
I think its a case of running before I can walk as I have a teacher but have not looked at music yet and I guess I need to wait till then but I have had more time over xmas and for the sake of the neighbours wanted to do more than long notes and scales.

Pete,
Do you cover this on the DVD?????

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
