I have a near mint condition Conn, heavy Gold plated, heavily engraved ( original owner's name engraved as well) Alto Sax.
Is this the 000 rated Virtuoso Deluxe model from 1927-28?
I hope this isn't a stupid question!

Maybe this helps: http://www.saxpics.com/conn/nw_virtuoso.htm

To have any chance, you need to check the serial number for the correct age against the range given in the top right corner of the link, and check the details in the description. Then take a good look at the pics.

But it sounds promising...

Sorry, I thought I had eadded the serial #. I must have wiped it when I ws editing.
It's M 180,xxxL
The "burnished" sections don't have engraving on them, just the shiny gold areas.
The palm keys and side-fingered keys don't have mother of pearl. Just the rollers between the keys are MoP.
The G# key is the nail file finish.
It's a beauty.

Thankyou.

You've made my night.

These shots should help - this is a Virtuoso deluxe:

and there are links to that and others here

And there's a standard gold New Wonder II here

with links to a lot more here:

Even if it's not a Virtuoso Deluxe, it'll still be a stunningly beautiful sax. It's also possible that a previous owner had it plated. You'll probably need to take it to an expert to really find out. One clue may be the engraving - was it plated before or after engraving? Not sure about the Virtuoso Deluxe, but generally the US saxes were engaved after plating, so a replate would be plated over the engraving.

I was a little confused by your reply - burnishing is a technique that gives gold a high gloss. Are you distinguishing between shiny from just plating and shiny from burnishing?

I used the word burnished incorrectly.
It is a dull gold finish. Almost like fine, fine sandpaper. I didn't know what to call it. It is made with the two finishes, both in gold plate.
Shiny gold on the bell and the keys and the sandpaper finish on the body. What do you call that?

Matt. They sandblast the matt areas and polish the rest before plating. Gives a nice contrast.
