There have been a lot of trailers on TV and radio recently for a new show (for which read variation on a theme) to find Britain's Number One Tribute Act, hosted of course by the ubiquitous and increasingly irritating Graham Norton.
I can almost see it now - various 'acts' like Robbie, the Beatles, Madonna, Kylie, Van Der Graaf Generator (shurely shome mishtake?), Abba, etc etc etc being championed or slagged by a panel of judges which of course will contain one token Mr Nasty, one Ms Lovely, and John Barrowman. Probably.
It hasn't even started yet and I'm fed up with it. Haven't we had enough culturally redundant karaoke shows recycling the same old stuff in a slightly different order purely to milk the public of its dosh paying for premium-rate dodgy phone votes yet? Can't they think of something just a bit different, or at least let Mark Lamarr present it.
Ah, but it's what the people want, isn't it? Course it is, 'cos that's all they get (ref 'Going Underground' by the Jam '...the public wants what the public gets, but I don't get what this society wants...'); Aldous Huxley only got it wrong in that soma isn't an ingestible psychotropic drug, it's what comes out of your TV on a Saturday evening.
I say don't encourage them! Don't watch it! 'Why don't you turn off your television set and go and do something less boring instead?'
'The revolution will not be televised'.
I did enjoy Strictly Come Dancing though.
I feel better now, I'm going for a little lie down.
