Intonation Tuning and intonation

Im Heathrow and don't know the area...theres a website that matches teachers near you gives you prices etc..

I did look at that but it seems you have to put up a chunk of money before they contact the teacher. I've had a couple of mails back from them asking if I'm ready to commit so maybe I'll just have to take the plunge

😀 I'm begining to think you maybe right paranormal as in spooky things happen when you blow into a sax (dogs howl, wife doubles up with laughter, neighbours bang on the walls obviously wanting to join in on the rhythm section) or maybe it's all just 'normal'
Lol..my staffy used to sing along bless her..she sounded better than me.. better on tenor than alto..6 years in weird things still happen...

Or phone your local school, college..
All good advice I'll give it a go. not keen on stumping up cash before hand. I know I'm only a few days in but I don't want to get into bad habits which are then even harder to break and I think a good footing to start with must help you along the way. I played banjo a few years back and was just fumbling around in the dark playing old American folk songs which was not really my bag but seems to be mostly what you get when learning. Found a teacher who in weeks had me playing with a completely different technique and jamming so I feel from experience that a teacher in the early days is the right way to go. I'm looking at getting a new mouthpiece and lig but who knows the ones that came with the Sax may be perfectly ok for a newbie. probably better spending my money on somebodies professional opinion than waste it on speculation. Thanks for your help

The good thing with being a "late bloomer" is that early bad habits take a long time to acquire and don't get deeply ingrained quickly. ... Unless you're stubborn and want them to be!
I think there is a lot of truth in what you say. With the banjo, although I did have some bad habits they were quite easy to correct in the early days. Nope not stubborn but want to be earning a living with the sax by this time next year!:old:

Well I had my first lesson for a while yesterday..It made a world of difference...been playing on my on in my caravan for quite a while and thought I was doing ok...recorded stuff to get feedback and thought that it sounded "souless" all the right notes but nothing..After six years I can't growl or add any emotion to my songs just a fast player who likes pop songs..The teachers feebback was so valuable...Ive always thought my larynx was out of reach but a change of emboucher made all the difference..Ive always played loose and relaxed but tightening up wow boy my chops hurt....talked about rhythm dynamics in my set list and bought back so much motivation...I'd say @JulesMartin go get one at any cost..time is of the essence no matter what stage we are at.........

I'm stubborn and I like stubborn persons. At the age of 67 I pretty much sound the same as I did when I was 16-17. Playing the same type of music, doing the same mistakes ..... on the other side I still have a big tone and I also try to compensate bad habits with dedication and devotion. Over the years I just had a few lessons with a sax teacher. He didn't like my music (blues, rock & roll, r&b ..... ) and tried to turn me in a more jazz direction. I chose the woodshed and a "long desert walk". A late bloomer is not easy to tame. "Unleash the animal inside of you", was Clarence Clemons (Bruce Springsteen's saxman) motto.

Banjo, accordion, fiddle, harmonica , tenorsax, bass, drums ... is a pefect line-up.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
