Funny, but I actually edited my first draft replacing a rhetorical "if you're out there" with "if someone is out there" just so you wouldn't think I was singling you out as a snitch. But as for your last point, I didn't leave SOTW for its toxicity. I brought it here with me!Just put that in context for me @Grumps that it's directed towards all adults you mention rather than me 😉 or I might have to cyber punch you on your nose.especially as I tattled no more than you.
And that BTW is a light hearted retort.

This is not something I can agree with. If something is off I would much prefer it was reported for us to deal with than members publicly holding each other to account. Fine by DM but disagreement on the forum is not good for the convivial atmosphere we try and maintain. We're adults here. Quit tattling.
Moved to own thread as I think is worthy of discussion.Tattling Vs Finger wagging Vs Reporting could be it's own thread with a poll?... Maybe off topic, here![]()
This is actually in the rules. Publically reprimanding other members for their behaviour and opinions on the forum is actually against the rules. And for a reason. We do not want to foster the kind of toxic atmosphere that can otherwise develop. If something is off I would much prefer it was reported for us to deal with than members publicly holding each other to account
We already do let people disagree with each other, and I do hope there are plenty of different opinions. There's no argument about that. I don't quite understand why you should think otherwise. But let people disagree with each other so long as it's not personal.
Now that can be a problem. We rely (more and more) on Search Engine Optimization and the more focussed a thread is the more likely to be picked up and indexed well. Trust me we have spent a lot of money on SEO experts as well as a lot of research and learning ourselves and it would be wreckless of me to ignore established SEO guidelines.Let a thread wander without cutting it to pieces and moving it somewhere no one is looking for. I've seen threads cut short because someone NOT in the conversation gets antsy.
Taking offense is a choice. Always.
But let people disagree with each other so long as it's not personal.
I don't know anything about all that, but you gotta do what you gotta do to keep the lights on. But as for the sentiment behind taking offense always being optional... that sentiment would be a thick skin and not rushing to anger. That does not mean I'm not going to take offense over something. It means I just realize it's a choice. Always. Can you see it that way?We rely (more and more) on Search Engine Optimization ...
Yes we do, and it takes so much work and money that's why I'm a bit touchy if people complain as if I curate threads just for the sake of fiddling about with it, as if there is a choice if I what I we are doing is our best efforts to keep the lights on.I don't know anything about all that, but you gotta do what you gotta do to keep the lights on.
There is another good reason to discourage this toxic type of behaviour. It discourages further healthy conversation. Sometime back on another forum, a new member posted a question quite innocently and immediately got showered with nasty inappropriate replies because some thought he / she failed to "look up" this fundamental topic beforehand.Publically reprimanding other members for their behaviour and opinions on the forum is actually against the rules. And for a reason. We do not want to foster the kind of toxic atmosphere that can otherwise develop.

I'll go as far as to say I don't think the forum would last long if I stopped working on basic SEO.
However I like to think we can strike a balance between laissez faire and pedantry in regard to post/thread curation. We will continue to split threads where one has obviously diverged into two clear topics that appears to search engines as a mess and therefore dropped to the bottom of the crawl budget. Instead two focussed thread topics that get indexed may go a small way towards ensuring the survival of the cafe a bit longer. The same applies to duplicate topics that could be merged. Google prefers quality focussed content over duplicate or near duplicate pages.
Off topic where there is no SEO issue is usually left alone, but in some cases splitting may still be relevant regarding the sites own content discovery search which weights heavily towards thread titles.
This thread was split because we now have one thread about the mix of sax/music threads vs the chat/miscellaneous topics. Both have a title that describes the discussion. It was about usebility and content discovery, nothing to do with someone getting antsy.
That policy is sound SEO and not negotiable, although we are always open to critique or correction if we get something wrong.
