Some nice ideas and good variation in the phrases T'. Liked the 'Summertime' quotes here and there.. Chris

Thanks Chris, and thanks for the BT. Truth is, I can't improvise yet 'cos I haven't got enough (read "any") licks in the bag yet, so I whistled a bit and then learnt how to play that. Any summertime quotes are purely coincidental, but I am aware of nicking the last few notes off something (just not sure what).

I'd say the ending was a bit of Misty ("look at me") and there was a bit of a reference to Don't it Make my Brown Eyes Blue midway I think. All good though. Courtney Pine's double bass player's solo at the Liverpool Jazz Festival was basically a string of references to well known songs including Three Blind Mice!

I wouldn't worry too much about licks for improvising - I haven't really got any either. Not saying I can improvise well yet (far from it) but I like to think of improvisation being more about finding an interesting melodic line and hopefully the odd lush blue harmony (usually by accident sadly). When I can do that well I'll be happy even if there's not a lick in sight. If I resort to trying to get fancy it usually just means I've run out of melodic ideas not to mention falling flat on its face for lack of execution.

I'm adverse to learning licks too - by unconscious choice it would seem. I try and try but they rarely stick enough to be at hand during a solo so I rely on my own melodic patterns. If I do work in licks they feel out of place with my own lines.

Learning licks means lots and lots of repetitions in all or most keys. I guess I don't have time or concentration 😀

Regarding the improvising, I'd like to get to what I can do on guitar, which is essentially be able to noodle along to simple tunes. I think it may be easier on guitar though, as once you learn the scale boxes to play in, you are changing key by simply shifting the boxes up and down the neck. Don't think I can do that on sax! Then there are little licks/trills/runs, that you throw into the mix to make it interesting.

I have a ways to go before I can do this, and I must admit to finding it frustrating at times. However, every now and then one of the kids comes in and says "that bit sounded like a sax dad", and that makes it all better 😀
