just entered my second month, and as well as still squeaking, I've now realised I have to work on my intonation big time (sounds better when I'm playing, not so much when I listen back to it...how can I be sharp and flat at the same time ;} )

sounds really good, are you sure your not ****ting us about only playing two months? just shouldn't be that good...already..

Just be aware that a squeak is most often caused by a dry reed...

Fraser, Di, you're too kind. I promise I'd never blown anything before getting my sax at the start of January...I don't even like blowing balloons 🙂 I've played guitar for 35-odd years (some odder than others), and do feel that that is helping a bit with the dexterity required for fingering, but the blowing (and the breathing) is a whole new challenge. I am absolutely loving it though!

Thanks Tom. I'm actually using a Legere plastic reed, and feel that the squeaking (which sometimes happens in the upper octave), and the occasional unintentional jump in octave may be more to do with my dodgy embouchure. I'll keep at it and see what happens!

Well done not bad you are going to go far I can feel it in my water as my ole mah used to say,squeaking can also be caused bya poorly positioned reed ie slightly of to one side,keep up the good work your putting some of us more advance saxoholics to shame....All the best ...John

Do you have a private teacher/tutor?
If not you'll really leap ahead within only a handful of lessons 🙂

Thanks matey, I actually had a second lesson last week. We have an agreement that I'll give him a call when I'm stuck with something rather than having a regular lesson schedule. I find it really useful, at the end of the hour we've gone through so much stuff that it keeps me busy at home for a while!

The backing is from the iReal-b app mentioned on another thread, a pretty cool little resource. I run it on my android phone

I was thinking of getting that, but it seems to be full of scary sounding chords and I would have absolutely no idea what to do with them.

Can one attach an eighth inch cable in to the phone and get the backing tracks on to a computer, without recording any ambient sounds, do you know...?

The good thing about it is that it plays all the scary sounding chords, leaving us to play the melody 😀

Yes, you can attach it to a computer as you say, and record what it's playing. You can also export a tune as a wav file and then bring that into your computer to record over. That's what I did, and it worked fine.
