You guys on this site are all so friendly and encouraging. The discussion is thoughtful and inspiring.......and what happens within three days of joining and hearing Pete's eulogy re: the Hanson ST-8 tenor. I ring Hanson up to make a polite enquiry and the delightful, charming Maria manages to get me to lever open my wallet and buy one!!

I rationalise it to myself that my existing tenor (an East German instrument going under the name of Champion) is in need of a big, big service and I can bypass that with a new instrument. Moreover Hanson offer 5 years free service too.

I now just have to explain it to my wife. Any tips, advice guys?

Oooooooo.... I'd first of all suggested moving any breakable items into the shed.

Then finding any and all sharp, pointed, blunt, heavy or otherwise potentially harmful items, and throwing them away, or giving them to a far-off neighbour.

Then.

Hide the cars under a bush, or leave them in the next county.

And then sit down, and carefully write down, in your very neatest handwriting, why you believe this is the very, very best thing you could possibly have done for her happiness, by making you happy, which joy will automatically overspill into your harmonious and continually happy life together, and don't her eyes look lovely in this light.

Buy a large bouquet of flowers.

Leave the note on the dining room table with the flowers, leave town, find a harbour, jump ship, but whatever you do, do it FAST! RUN! Don't look back, I've seen the horror-movies and I can already hear the chords whyareyoustillsittingthere????

You'll have to get someone else to intercept the courier bearing the source of all this unsolicited happiness though, lest it end up severely resembling a gold-plated tv-dinner dish.

(****! What are you DOING??? I've got palpitations here!) 8|

Best of luck with the new horn, let us all know what you think of it!

Well done, Paul, I'm sure you won't regret getting a Hanson 🙂

Paul, I have a plan

Start of discussing mint, vintage Selmer Mk VIs or solid silver Yanagisawas and have some prices to hand...dodge some flying plates.....wait a day... >.<

Then say you've had a rethink, and started looking at more reasonable pro level saxes.......Yamahas, non-silver Yanagisawas, Keilwerths...dodge the rest of the plates and a casserole dish......wait another day..... >.<

...and before she gets onto the cutlery, say you've come to your senses and good horn which is really good value for money relative to the first ones you started with, despite the fact you desperately wanted to have one like all the famous people 😛

....all in all, you should only have to spend a couple of weeks in the doghouse...

...where you can practice to your heart's content

Best of luck

Sheer genius tengu01, it's almost like making a decision by proxy. Except a bit more hazardous. But at the end of it all, it'll be like, HER idea! A month or two later, harmony restored, and Paul's wife will be talking about it at dinner dates like it was HER idea all along!

I think my wife and Ken's wife went to the same cookery school.
My dinner consisted of chicken-kiev biscuits, carbonised, crunchy brocolli, and green shoelaces. (She SAID they were green beans, but I'm no fool, you know....) I've resolved to steer clear of any naked flames for at least a week. 8|

Well, if your posts suddenly stop after a couple of weeks, we can all go 'Cluedo':

It was Mrs Dennis, in the kitchen with either the saxophone or Pyrex casserole dish.

Let us know how it goes

😉

Jus tell her it's an empty box. "Yes, I bought an empty box."

Everybody needs a hobby, and compared to stuff like motorcycles, building hot rods, planes, gambling or hard drugs, saxophones are pretty dang cheap.

Ahhh! KEN, you devil! My better half is German TOO! She must've moved to the advanced level and has mastered "The Exploding Knackwurstm mit radioaktif Zuaerkraut und throat-parching kartoffelnzalad".

Sorry to divert the thread for a sec, Paul. Lee, maybe the "empty box" theory is too dangerous, because it might just be mistaken for an almost made-to-measure coffin, and with careful packing, our friend Paul will quietly disappear..... while his wife, dressed in black and clutching a large insurance cheque, will bravely admit to all and sundry that the beautiful, shiny saxophone above the mantelpiece was her last parting gift to Paul, who alas, disappeared without trace, and never did get to see it...

Oh dear Ken,

The Tengu plan is the process of negotiating with your better half for things that they just don't, won't and never will see the value of.

So you just have to manage their expectations by starting with the completely outlandish and end up in the mildly outrageous.

It lookes like you've been Tengu'd >.<

Ah, stop it! You guys are killin' me!
I can picture Bob's big band, carefully arrayed around a battered Ford Fiesta on bricks!
Ken's definitely been Tengu'd, Bob carefully believes he has some privacy sitting in a large goldfish-bowl, I try to lock myself away in my workshop in the conviction that if the neighbours can't see me, they can't HEAR me either. I tell ya fellas, we're like a pack of naughty kids competing with the wiles, low-cunning, vile tempers and all-seeing-eye of the forces of darkness.
My wife's making pre-dinner snacks by the way, EVERYBODY HIDE!..If you need me, I'm in the workshop, but don't tell!
