The Guest Spot Blues Thread

I wish..... I wish I could get this part right, it just does not sound like the CD

2nd page 4th bar E C E D B D C........

Just as you go into that bar there are 2 vertical lines as if a change in tempo but nothing written, not that changing the tempo has helped me
:S

In the bar before (3rd) it sounds like they have not played the last C

Garry, sorry this is a bit late!

Seems to be a music theory book but relates it all to sax playing which is a lot more useful than my "Theory for Dummies" book!

The book says it is a manual and I would agree with that. 48 lessons from beginner to pro. It starts right at the beginning (how to put on a reed etc) and then gets quite advanced by the end.

There are 2cds ( which I haven't tried yet) that cover both Bb and Eb saxes - very useful If you've got both types.
It also mentions how to do special effects, playing in all keys, transposing etc

A useful book, I think, and definitely worth the ?17

Back on this
Have left it for awhile as been doing other things Mostly not Sax
But I am back on it now and going to try a bit harder not just the easy bits

So I have set myself to learn all of Harlem Nocturne on alto, If I can do it, I may have ago on Tenor after

Just this one piece from now till new years day :erm:

Anyone else still doing this book, how you getting along ?

Smiffy, I'm still getting through it. I've got some of them down pretty well to the backing (not all the grace notes though) and some others the theme, tho' again not all in time to the backing. I return to a couple each time I practice. I've not done Swinging Shepherd Blues (I just don't like the tune) and Moonglow sounds too high in G Maj (for both my taste and ability!). I've got Moonglow in a simpler version in C Maj.
Just bought Guest Spot Gershwin and run through a couple of the themes as sight exercises so far.

Hi Smiffy, how did i miss this thread? I just bought the guest spot classic blues, that is the one we are talking about ?
Anyway i have just started working on cry me river and Harlem nocturne. Loverley toones!
I will keep you posted on my progress, have you done all the book?
By the way i'm playing them on tenor on my new Mauriat with my new PPT. ( can't you tell i'm rather smug? ) Phil :w00t:

I'm currently hacking Harlem Nocturne to bits. The little 5 note chromatic runs are doing my head in as my fingeres will not move fast enough, but the timing is getting better for the main theme.

Yeah it looks easy with all the slurs, Iam trying the Bb with (L) 1st and (R) 1st, instead of the side key I find it a touch quicker

Just been playing cry me a river, i love that tune, it's like your singing it when you play, not quite getting the fiddly bit just before the second double tempo though. However i feel it sound quite quite melodic. Also trying Harlem nocturne, also having problems hitting that high E then coming down to the B natural. I also play the Bb the same way you do on that track. I'm also doing some grade three jazz stuff so trying to fit it all in. Happy Christmas Phil :w00t:

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
