hi when am practicing on my tenor i keep going octave higher and sometimes in the low notes its comes out high and low at the same time like harmonic or some think if you know wot i mean is this normal for a beginner i just want to make sure just in case there might be some think wrong with the tuning of this sax 🙂

Is your sax new or used? If this is happening mainly on the right hand keys (f,e,d) you may have a leak or a problem with the octave key.

However, your embouchure may be a little tight as well, try loosening up a bit and practice some of Pete's long tone exercises, taking it one note at time before you head into repair.

Best of luck and be patient with yourself. 🙂

thanks guys 😉 carl

I vote embouchure. As a new player my teacher is helping me work through this on my Tenor right now too. Usually when I try too hard or am concentrating hard I start to tense up all over including my embouchure and up goes the octave.

Next time you do it, try and notice if you're tensed or rigid and try relaxing a little, see if it helps.

i had exactly the same problem when i started on my tenor...i posted as such on here and someone (cant remember who) gave me some great advice,,,, Blow the high notes and breath the low notes.....you have to kind of visualise this in your mind ( like blowing air through your lips for the high notes and sighing for the low) but when you get your head around the concept it really does work

ps..if whoever gave me this tip reads this....many thanks and my sincere apologies for forgetting you.

Hiya,

I've been playing long tones and various other exercises for about a year, I started out on Alto, but picked up a Walstein Tenor just before Christmas. With regards to officially learning, I'm on my 4th lesson and loving it!
