SOTM SOTM October 2026 - The Chicken

[Taragot]

Dear Forum Members,

I’m very glad to host my first SOTM here in the café. I choose „The Chicken“ from Pee Wee Ellis. I’m shure, most of you know the song from Jaco Pastorius, but there are several other recordings out there.

Here are lead sheets in C, Bb and Eb (one document) and some backing tracks (many more on youtube).

For soloing and scale decisions, I found this guitar video helpful, but I personaly think blues most of the time and try to play groovy and in time instead of overthinking the notes too much.

Hoping for many funky contributions!

I'll be out of the country almost for the entire month with no chance to even touch a horn unless magically something pops up in Parana.

For Beginner/Intermediate who might like a little extra support

I'm shure, something magical pops up in Parana, but perhaps not a sax. Have a great trip!

The Tutorial Video is great - I'll try to learn something out of it for the next recording.

To get the ball rolling: I recorded a bass&flute video the other day. I play mostly bass these bass (just for fun, not in a band yet) and love my fretless.
The timing is not always great (partly due to the recording situation), but I can live very well with a less than perfect take.

Hello,
I tried to record a track yesterday, and got ashamed how much out of sync I played behind the beat. Today the same - and found that the ASIO drivers on my recording device were switched off.
So here's another attempt on tenor:

This is really fun to play and I'm hoping for many contributions.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who fell in that trap. I tried to record some Spanish guitar and found this really bad lag between the natural guitar sound and the headphones. And then some other artifacts that eventually led me to the asio drivers.

That aside, great recording, Dirk!

Half of the month is over - and here's a kind reminder, that "The Chicken" is really a cool and fun piece to play. Hoping for some contributions!

I can understand not everyone wants to post their recording, if you have downloaded the dots and backing track, perhaps a few words of how you are finding the tune would help keep the threads alive 😁

[Taragot]

I found the head of this tune very approchable, easier than I thought on a Bb Horn.
The changes are not so easy for improvising, but a few notes of a blues scale played funky go a long way on this tune. The head played twice without an impro part would be a great track, too.

i like the chicken

Great, a contribution for this month's SOTM!
I hope this is the fanal for many more tracks to come in the next 3 days.

I like the flow of your impro a lot, saxn00b445! Sounds to me that you really practiced your parker omnibook. I think i recognized a bit here and there (and some ornithologie and dona lee), and it works really well over this tune.
