Hi Phil,
There's a book by Arnie Berle called - Jazz Saxophone Licks, Phrases and Patterns. It contains literally hundreds of licks over all kinds of chords and scales and progressions. To get the most out of this book you need to play each example in all keys. They're not written in super difficult rhythms and contrary to other books on the market they are good usable licks and not just mathematical sequence excercises.

Yeah there is Phil, and we sell it at Jazzwise, but I wouldn't recommend it. Some of them are duplicated in the book, most are theoretically correct but 'public domain', not interesting at all.

'Simple jazz riffs' - best books are actual solos by guys like Bob Mintzer, Jim Snidero, Eric Marienthal etc -> in fact the one I posted a link to earlier is out of Bob's '14 Jazz and Funk Etudes'. There are several other books on that page I would suggest. But seriously, the best source of licks are recordings!!

Are transcriptions of any of my man Johnny Hodges simpler parts available? I think it would help my reading if I could hear it as well as see it.

'Simpler parts' for Johnny Hodges? Prob with 'Rabbit' is his amazing ability to bend notes, very difficult to play it his way even if you get the notes in front of you.

Don't know of any Johnny Hodges transcription books (the guy was born 1906!) ... here's one transcription on the Net. My advice - transcribe! There's a new cd series out featuring him.

I remember I transcribed 'Daydream' and 'Passion Flower' once... and opened up a whole new world of pitch bending on alto. Great stuff!

Simon, one of the things I've found from listening to Johnny Hodges, apart from having an affinity with his style and sound, is that even with my limited technique I am able to get a lot of that pitch-bending quite well (even if I do say so myself ) and I work on it quite a lot because it's an effect I like. Probably stems from guitar-playing and liking the bluesy stuff. Is there anyone else out there who can 'bend it like Johnny'?

Now, I must try and find Pete's lurking lick...
