I have a Hanson SA-8 as you rightly pointed out Jambo. Mine is the 24k-f version. Which I don't believe makes any difference to the sound over the SA-8-24K, just looks a bit nicer. Basically the finish on the body is like a frosty matte gold and the key work is your normal shiny gold colour. The colour of the gold is very rich and orange like as well.
This was the first sax I bought as intended to last a life time along with accumulating various other bits of equipment as well.
My sax is now two years old.
I'll try and sum up what I've found out over the two years.
Plus:
They are very friendly and do bother with customer service.
5 year guarantee that covers parts as well so really unless you sit on it it won't cost you your normal servicing allowance for 5 years.
The key work and mechanism is good. There is certainly room for improvement but it does it's job well and it certainly is nice to play on.
The sound is very bright, but incredibly pure. This means it projects really well and sounds really full though you will most likely want to darken the natural sound a bit with a mouthpiece and reed combination you fin works. (Personally Otto Link STM with RJS is fabulous! best combo for under 400 I found, though I haven't tried the ebonite mouthpieces Pete is using. RPC I believe).
Includes a Selmer S80 C* and a decent BG strap though I personally find the BG ligature to be in essence wrong. It's huge!
It is a very good saxophone, especially for the money.
Negatives:
The lacquer wore a bit faster than I thought it would, a bit disappointing.
The case it comes with isn't greatly durable, feet fell off, the zip broke and the straps broke as well.
Then the only big problem I had was a personal issue with mine that the saxophone was set-up completely wrong. But in their credit, they have found the problem - eventually - and fixed it - hopefully - for me and I should receive my saxophone back later today or on Monday! Though because their service is so good and they honour their promises this has been completely free except two ways of delivery at ?9.50 each. Not bad I must say.
So all in all I would recommend one. Though it's not going to be that magic sax we all search after, it will certainly bring some magic to your heart and it will serve you well.
But maybe I think I'd recommend getting the silver finish or the raw brass or something as they are slightly cheaper enabling you to get yourself a nice mouthpiece set-up and the tonal differences are going to be minimal. The saxophone could do with a bit of a darker voice anyway.
so maybe going for the vintage lacquer would be preferable.
Hope this helps.
