IOTM Sept 2015 - 'Turn Down not Tuna App!'

Impro of the month
@kevgermany A rootless voicing is a harmony term from jazz piano and guitar, It merely means a chord such as G9 voiced without the root, in this case G. In most cases the bass player will supply the G so the notes you have to play around with are 3, 5, 7, 9 of G dominant, viz. B,D,F,A.

Pianists and guitarists will often use a different order of the notes to give a wider sound spread over greater than one octave. Sax players can also do this. Returning to the triad theme, note that 3, 5, 7 of G9 (or G7) is B diminished triad, and 5,7, 9 of G9 is D minor triad. This provides endless ways of producing great sounds, particularly if you introduce chromaticism. For example use a semitone above or below the initial pitch to give a triad with a semitone intro. Played in swing feel you now have 8 notes per bar and a multitude of different ways to play them. And not a lick in sight!

Rootless voicing.... That's a new one on me. Is this a form of chord substitution, or am I miles off?
It is a first step in that direction. Often debatable.

"Ruthless voicing" is a common practice from guitar players that add all the extensions that a saxophone player would never use.

Jeanette, you are not trying to improvise, you are improvising!. Remember that the choice of a few good notes is better than a flurry of fast meaningless notes. Just listen to Miles Davis. He could play as fast as the best of them, but usually chose not to.

Here is my second installment (with my teacher's hat on). This version also on clarinet uses the scales that fit the chord changes, but also incorporate "voice leading" ie. 7ths down to 3rds from one change to the next.

If this keeps up, I'm going to have to move to Cafe Clarinet.

Are you guys all mathematicians? I never did maths. No wonder my timing etc sucks

I'm really sad to hear us clarinetist are scorned🙁
I went to a clarinet lunch once, at a collector's place, all the best classical players in town were there.
Despite the fact that our host was a man of incredible knowledge and culture, conversations were mostly revolving around orchestral passages and who was conducting at that time.
Like being 80 children in a classroom and and the most exciting thing is when the teacher praises you when you read your line correctly...

Moreover, nobody was an improviser, so let's stop the offtopic.
here is your forum (I met an exceptional player through it, though)
