Resonators

How do you install resonators on sax pads? Is it possible to install them as a sort of "after market" type-thing once pads have already been installed? How much of a difference do they make in sound, and what are the best varieties/types?

Resonators can be purchased separately from the pads and pads can also be purchaed with or without resonators.

Resos are usually fitted by splaying the end of the resonator tube (the bit that goes through the pad) using a punch type tool. Some resonators are held in place by a mechanical device that pops/snaps into place.

In order to replace resos the pads have to be removed from the key cups.

As for a difference in sound - you will open up a can of worms asking that !!

here's my opinion.......

I dont think that the type of reso ie materials really matters all that much I am of the opinion that its the size of the resonator in relation to the tone hole thaht makes the difference.

I have only been asked once to fit a certain type of pad with a certain resonator on it - the customer was extremely happy but I put it down to all the other work i did on the repad ( leveling tone holes, getting a good even seal all round the pads, and good regulation of the key work.

as for preferences I dont have any

There's a lot of comparative info on pads and resos, and other stuff, at www.musicmedic.com.

Griff, I tend to agree that the resonator material isn't that important. I usually go with the brown plastic ones, as large as will fit the pad. That way there's nothing to corrode or rattle or any additional weight.

Some of those waffley looking gold-plated resos would be pretty cool looking for a younger guy, or maybe somebody who likes to show up in gold lame' suits and sequins and stuff. Personally I like to keep it kind of discreet - in accordance with my talent, i guess.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
