Question about small dent in neck

My neck has a little dent in it, apparently where some tech soldered on the part that attaches to the spring that controls the octave key on top. Anyway, I haven't played any other horns like mine without the dent, so I can't say for sure if it has any effect. It's fairly small, and I suppose all the air ends up in a pretty uniform stream anyway by the time it ends up in the body of the sax, since the dent is pretty high up on the neck. Any ideas? Thanks.

Dents in saxphones can effect tone but much of it depends on where the dent is. In my experience the close to the mouthpiece the more effect it will have. If the dent is more of a "ding" then there may be nothing to worry about. You could play your sax and use a tuner to see how in tune it is throughout the whole range of the sax. If theres no major tuning issues then nothing to worry about.

dents can be removed by any competent repairer sometimes though it can be just as cheap to get a new crook

particularly if its a Jupiter/Yamaha etc.

Yanagisawa do replacement necks too, I think, as well as the more expensive ones, made by Gloger (sp?).

Can a dent have much effect on sound, or is it just the intonation that is affected? My alto neck has a small dent, at the bottom of the 'pit' (more like a small flat spot on the curved surface, that's how shallow it is) is a crease or dent a bit less than 1 cm in length. It's right up near the octave vent, running along the side of the crook, and doesn't seem to affect the intonation - or I compensate for any effect subconsciously - and I can't tell if it's affected the sound at all as it was there when I bought it. It seems too small to worry about, as you can barely feel it inside the crook.

Cheers, Bob

you can get a new neck for almost all new saxes but the reason why I mentioned jupiter and yamaha in particular is that they have a great spares back up system .....in this country. (UK) For example with Yamaha if it is in stock I can get it usually 2 days later!

Also repairing a dent in a Yamaha 275 or a Jupiter 500 say - I would recommend the customer got a new crook as they could well be cheaper than a couple of hours labour for repairing - (dentwork/buffing perhaps and relacquering)
It depends also on what the customer wants as far a cosmetics/looks go

Here's a pic I took. Notice how that little metal thing (that is where the bottom of the spring touches) looks like it goes inward into the neck. There is a small ding or dent there where it was placed. You can feel it with your finger underneath. I suppose it's not too bad, and my pitch seems good, so I'm pretty sure I have nothing to worry about but I wanted to bring it up to be sure. If necessary I can ask my repairman to try to push it out. But if it's not necessary I might as well just leave it.

Neither. People like both of them, and they both have their pros and cons. Please create your own thread in the proper category if you wish this discussed further.

Exactly, I can move entire threads to the correct place, but not individual messages.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
