That's the one Phil! Great, innit? I imagine it's from the same session as the Beck clip, as he and the pianist from that one are on the Van clip, as well as Pete King

yeah they are from the same session, it was a documentory about british blues.
please see http://www.pbs.org/theblues/aboutfilms/figgis.html

I have just ordered a copy 😛

🙁 So guys i went into John Packer in taunton this morning to buy me the JP Model, and ahhhhhhh, They dont have any, the factory that makes them burnt down. Gutted!!!!!

I have the Prelude alto and like it a lot. Our friend Linky Lee had a Prelude tenor and really liked it. There's at least one other very happy Prelude tenor owner on this forum too. 🙂

Peter

PS that's terrible about the factory burning down

Sorry, I should have said free playing advice, lessons are for kids.

That clip is brilliant Tom. KC's sound is great, from the mellow lines while Jack is singing through to the tougher-sounding solo. Also his big grins are great while the guitarist (who he?) is soloing.

Two slight drawbacks evident on that video for the saxophonist.
1) Guitarists like many piano players can hum or sing what they are playing.
2) How the hell do you drink good liquor whilst playing a sax? 🙁

Razor,

Sorry, I'm a bit late to the party!

Sad to hear about the JP situation. I bought a JP alto last year whcih has served us (my son plays too) very well. I was also going to suggest you speak to the guys there about finding a teacher.

But it's not all bad news. I went to Pete's mate Martin (of Woodwind & Brass) last weekend and tried out their Walstein's which everyone has been raving about here. I was curious because no-one had even mentioned the JP instruments anywhere and yet they seemed pretty decent.

We tried the Walstein side by side with the Walstein Alto, with the same setup and everything and they were actually very similar but I would give the Walstein (in my limited experience) the edge. In my opinion it is slightly warmer-sounding (if that's what you like) and benefits from better intonation, which we were beginning to struggle with at the top of the JP's range. It's also slightly easier to blow and the keywork is just a tad lighter, which makes a difference, especially in the left hand key cluster.

Hey...I'm not even on commission!

I did indeed have a Prelude tenor which Pauline now owns, and seems to be happy with even if she is having size difficulties.

But I did replace the Prelude with the Walstein and did try them out back to back. I also compared it side to side with the Yanigasawa 901 and preferred it once I'd found a nice mouthpiece. The noticable differences were that the Yanigasawa had smaller pearl keys, or may just more concaved which made it feel smaller, the key cups were smaller and there wasn't as much bracing on it. This gave it a slightly lighter feel and less weight but it felt a tad fragile.

Overall I preferred the Walstein as it seemed like a superb all rounder. It sounded slightly warmer than the 901, but then if you were to compare it to a 902 I guess the difference would be made up as I've always found the 902s to be warmer than the 901s.

Guys

Check this one out http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=gliuFUS-cas

AWESOME

Great. Lovely rasping bluesy tone. So is he 'growling' throughout the solo to get that tone or is it possible to get that sound without growling? Hope so, cos growling is one thing I just can't seem to get right at all 🙁

Peter

So guys horn is on its way!!!!! Cant wait, i bought a second hand Sonora, i expect it will be crap. But it all i can afford at the moment (xmas), kids to feed and present etc. However if i take to it, her in doors says i spend some more. SO WATCH THIS SPACE. Oh can some one tell what the most blues scale is? Key etc

Cripple Lemon Clinton...  , love it Simon, great stuff.

When you finally get to the bottom those links are an excellent resource, thanks for that.

regards, phil

Phil - what disturbs me is that how a good question about playing the blues gets hijacked by the equipment junkies and we end up way up Walstein-Hanson Alley...

Er, I don't think the thread's been hijacked Simon. Razorfish (who started the thread) is asking advice on what saxophone to get so it's quite on topic for people to come up with suggestions.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
