I've not seen Phil Wood's name mentioned here. An astonishing alto player...if you get the chance listen to the track 'When we were young'..a tribute to Kennedy. Phenomenal.

Can also play beautifully in a range of styles. Phil did the alto sax solo on Billy Joel's 'Just the way you are'.

He's certainly been around for a long time Bobby. He writes of when he met Charlie Parker sometime in the early 50's I think. Phil Woods would have been in his early 20's at the time. I guess he's well over 70 now! Of course he married Chan Parker, Charlie Parker's wife!

Phil Woods was a name I first heard about 18 years ago.
Imature in my sax world he never struck the right chord with me
Little by little I have been able to ignore him less and less and in recent years I have simply bowed and accepted how wrong I was.
But I still don't own an album of his.

Any recommendations of an album that capture his story from 14 to 74 years of age????

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
