TV/film/books Oscar Peterson Black + White

[jbtsax]

I just discovered this well made documentary on the life and career of Oscar Peterson. It includes a cast of well known musicians who reflect upon the contributions to music made by this jazz great. Also included is a very moving story of how the life and times of Oscar Peterson overlaps the racial struggles of that era in the U.S. It can be watched with a subscription to Hulu.

Oscar Peterson: Black + White

Dives into Peterson’s life as jazz royalty with a focus on the racism he was forced to endure throughout his career and his commitment to mentoring younger players.

A great tune composed by Oscar Peterson I hadn't heard before watching this movie.

I love Hymn to Freedom. One of my very favorite tunes. Here is a version with saxophone:

Oscar himself was a nice singer, very much in the Nat Cole vein.

He certainly had some amazing collaborations with saxmen, including Ben Webster, Sonny Stitt and Stan Getz.
