I am sure you will all be delighted to hear that I am off on me hols tomorrow.... Be back a week on Friday by which time I will be seriously missing my daily sax fix....

..... anyway, so that you have something to remember me by here is a small annihilation of a classic... Couldn't find a suitable back track so it's just me this time

I don't know the song and can't find an example of it on line unfortunately. The very low note sounds off though. What's the key signature?

Import or record it into audacity and hit the karaoke button in effects. Hey presto no blue eyes.

I was looking for the wrong tune title.

Yes looks like F major (or maybe D minor) but with that low C sharp accidental thown in as a bit of a blue note. Someone more experienced here may have a more educated view.

Although it sounds odd on its own it might sound right when resolved with the backing chords. My ear's not good enough to tell for sure what note's what. Apologies if I've unfairly implied it might have been a bum note.

I would have liked to have played through the opening refrain last night but it was band practice night and too late by the time I got home. I've found a backing track for it on the iRealB app this morning if you've got that (if not it might be worth getting, costs about £6 or £7 for the app but you then have access to thousands of backing tracks for free) - no idea what the track's like yet.

It hadn't struck me as a guitar app. Its basically just backing tracks to solo over. They don't sound brilliant on the phone but come a bit more to life once you get them into audacity and play over them. Well actually I've only done one so far which I posted a link to a couple of days ago. Have a listen, not to my terrible improvising, but to the backing track to see if it sounds useful. If it does it might be worth getting the app. They have a version for Android phones now as well as for iPhones/iPads.

It sounds minor to me.

Take a look at the minor keys here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minor_key

You'll see that the 7th is sharpened at times.

So for me D minor, not natural, but which variant you can't tell without seeing the whole score. (And it could switch during the tune as well).

I thought the same thing - chiefly because it gives chords but not the melody. If iReal B had the melody, I'd snap it up.

I assume that the chords can be used by pulling out notes that give the flavour of the chord to improvise over the backing track? Sadly, for us mere mortals, we'd need to spend so long working out which notes belong in the chord that the song would be over before we get the second note out.

Or, I suppose, we could just noodle along and then work out the chords later if we felt that our improvised effort needed more depth?

Or simply try to play the melody by ear, with the backing track keeping us in time (rather than pausing over trickier passages, which I know I do) or find the sheet music elsewhere and hope that matches the backing track?

Just had a look. There's an option to share a track as an image which you can then email etc., and then presumably print or import into Word or something.

Re improvising over the chords. For my Summertime effort I just sort of played through the head by memory and then improvised staying in A minor (effectively C major). Just found it best to avoid too many Fs in that one as they can clash with some of the chords.

On other tunes I find improvising in the appropriate bluescale very effective. I don't need the chords written down for either of those approaches although of course they are rather simplistic and won't always work.

My plan is to progress to improvising properly over the chords by knowing which are the safe notes/arpeggio notes for the chord but as you say that takes a LOT of practice and learning to do at anywhere near acceptable speed. The journey continues... hopefully one day!
