That's one gorgeous cat. If it's a tom, then Baxter or Sketchley. If it's a queen, then Jezebel or Lucretia, as female cats deserve a posh name.

Where did it come from, and how old is it?

Hint; if your cats tend to wander a bit, they very soon learn to come home if you call them at meal-times. Ours respond very well to a shout of 'din-dins', our daughter;s pair come to the call of 'you're having fish in a minute'.

Cheers, Bob

It's a bloke cat. We got him from the local cat rescue place. He was a stray about 2 years old. I tend to think you need to wait a while for a name, see how they behave and what their quirks are. This one's quirks currently are the desire for cat food. And human food.

My ideas so far are Dave or Spike (I'm sure Spike will appreciate that one, gruss)

What's with this thing about calling cats Dave? I've heard the idea before, I think it's great 🙂

I guess it's a backlash against Tiddles or Felix. But if you've heard the idea before then maybe we need to rethink. I don't like the idea of people saying "Dave?, that's' sooo 2005".

How about letting him have a walk around your studio and seeing which sax he goes to, or blow them and see which he likes, then name him appropriately... either Conn, Buesh, Martin or Hans or is that a bit naff.

Our cats (visiting ferrals) have been called Ronnie & Reggie (twins), Togs (has a coat like a duvet (10 togs)), Hissing Sid and just Cat. The dogs are called Sonny (or Gangly Git) and Josie/Dolly/Dollop.

In which case he might be Grafton or Fender.

Hissing Sid is great though.

The Naming of Cats by TS Eloit

The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isn't just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first I'm as mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES.
First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, George or Bill Bailey--
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter--
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name that's particular,
A name that's peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bombalurina, or else Jellylorum-
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond there's still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover--
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in a rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable effable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.

It was a harder decision than naming my son (Tobias Thelonoius.)

Also if you are a cat lover this is a great site!!

You're right, this is harder than naming our children (Joe and Jim). I'll check that site out.

'unfortunately a telecaster?'

My ears don't like those words.
Telecasters are THE best guitar.

(with many exclusions 😛 )

My cat was named 'Rosie' but she was rescued and was obviously from a bad background as she was an alcoholic! she knew the sound of a can of beer opening, the smell of wine everything.
She used to go mad for the stuff till we weened her off of the alcohol onto the old rice noodles! (That's another silly cat story)

She's now a vegetarian, rice noodle loving cat.

We also built a floor to ceiling cat pole with a dangle thing for her to play with and a ledge at 6ft for her to sit/sleep on and rope all around it to climb up and down etc. It was the greatest cat pole.

I always wanted to call our cats baileys, or rum, or one gin and one tonic: Liked the idea of standing at the back door shouting baileys! Baileys where are you?! come here baileys!

You never know after a time someone might have taken pitty and brought me some 😛

How about finn - he seems to have a fin like white patch on his nose.
Or santa, with his big white beard.
Or do a john lennon and call him Jesus.

Oli

(ps looks like i'm about as good at naming cats as i am bands!)

The more I think about it, the more he looks like a Dave. OK, it may have been done before, but if you look closely at any male cat he looks like a Dave...

Other suggestions - I like Roger's philosopher observation, how about Plato? Failing that, Sheffield seems like a good name. Bearing in mind you will have to call him in, Rape would not be a good name.

I never had this much trouble naming my daughter, we both agreed she looked like an Abigail (which means 'a fathers joy', how true!) within a couple of days.

Many years ago, we had a semi-alcoholic but harmless neighbour - she would start celebrating Christmas in a serious way around about August Bank Holiday, and stay out of it (on barley wine fer chrissakes) until Easter. She owned a totally mangy, smelly old corgi. It's name was Pete....

No offence....

Ramblingly yours, Bob

Dave is a good name.

As for Plato, wise as he was, praps not the best philosopher to choose: His thorough dislike or all expressive art forms would have meant he probably would have wholey distrusted jazz, as well as any other expressive music, as it distracted the mind from its more logical and restrained thoughts, and pandered to irrational and emotional mindsets.

Then again, as a pure and unrepresentational form of art, instrumental music would have faired better than the representational arts, which were in his eyes so far removed from reality as to be irrelevent, untrust worthy and distracting.

Meh, what did he know. how about Miles, Charlie, John, Sonny or wayne?

Or kenny 😛
