Hello, My question is Can anyone tell me how to go about tighting my loose neck on my buescher 400 top hat and cane tenor sax? Or is this a job for a pro repairman? The neck still moves around after I tighten the bolt as hard as i can by hand. thanks ,Scott.

Hi Scott,

the first thing you should try is to thoroughly clean the screw and (i use wire wool ) then apply some key oil or 2 stroke oil to the key and then screw it home.
sometimes this is enough to get the reciever to tighten enough onto the collar of the crook.
If this doesn't work then get if off to your repair shop.

let us know how you get on.

It's a really easy job for any repairer who's got the right tool for the job (a set of tiny rollers mounted on a thing that looksl ike acan openner). Shouldn't take more than 5 minutes

Thank you Griff for the info on tighting the neck of my sax. It did the trick. Also, thank you for the advice Nachoman, If it continues to act up I,ll Make sure the repairman has one of those neck tighting canopeners. Scott

one reason your crook collar may be tight is that it could be slightly out of round - which would then mean that part of the collar could be a larger diameter than it should be thus making it seem tight.

the same also but much less common could be said for you reciever. if its playing fine with no leaks then its probably just a tight fit.

I tend to clean out the reciever and the collar on the crook with 0000 size wire wool.

I don't believe it's appreciably out of round, as it plays fine and leak-free. Occasionally if I don't clean up and dry the tenon and receiver well after playing it'll get progressively tighter, until I give it a good clean. I don't use anything more abrasive than a cloth, it might be worth going over it with some wire wool. Having said that, it's not a big problem, I suppose my main concern would be that as it is a little tight I could be causing a problem that wasn't there before, although it's always been that way since I bought the horn, to a greater or (when I sort it) a lesser extent.

Cheers, Bob
