Hey all, there are a few threads on these at the other place but I didn't see one here. Found a listing for a King Tempo bari, I have a message to the seller asking about the serial # (edit: it's 60165, second number 1406) but anyone have a clue to this one's era/condition from the pictures?

OK, well as already mentioned...King Tempo saxes were Keilwerth stencils. This is a New King model by JK.

No relationship to a King, Ohio design. So the seller is unaware.

Good horns, these. Their tone is Monster, intonation is decent, and they are fairly mouthpiece friendly. My first reaction was 'too expensive'. But then I look at condition and fact it was overhauled.

But then I look realistically apot the currently self-inflicted teetering of the US economy... and gotta ask what this guy is thinking. I think I know....he figures he can recoup the entire investment he made in the overhaul. That was a naive assumption. As a seller, from my perspective, he probably should have just done a $350 COA and a few new pads...and listed it for $1800....

Then as also already mentioned, for another $100 or so above his asking, you could easily get yourself a modern low A, used....

So....$400 overpriced. If he'd take $2250...not a bad buy, assuming you like it. I have been a big fan of vintage JKs over the years but the one niggling thing about them for me is the location and size of the pinky tables. They finally dealt with that on the Couf Superba....but the reach for someone with not-long fingers to that table always just bugged me, a little. Somewhere in the 25+ years of that table, they could have scootched it up the tube around 8mm and that would have been that.

But a playtest would answer that for you.

Thanks all, I had the same reaction it looks overpriced though not outrageous. It especially caught my eye because I play a New King stencil alto that I like and know I want a bari some day. But I'm only a few years in so not sure if it makes sense at this point.

I just don't understand. You mean a low A bari should go for more money? Why?
I may start a new thread on low A vs low Bb

Now started the thread:

The New Kings baris are good. They were sold as low A baris as well. Keilwerth saxes were selling well back in the late 60's. Conn, King, Buescher and Martin couldn't compete with older constructions and high prices, Keilwerth was a good alernative. Later on the european makers had to struggle with competion from new Japanese baris; Yamaha YBS-61 in the early 70's and Yangisawa (stencils) B6 around 74-75. Both with low A as standard. I like baris to Bb. Maybe it's beacause I didn't owned and played a good low A bari?

Yes, pretty much always. I mean, it depends on model, right ? Like a naked lady era 12m vs. a Taishan low A....both in great shape....the Conn would cost more.

But generally if you are looking at reputed brands...the low A will cost more. People nowadays want the low A, many consider not having it to be a drawback....

Not sure spending $2g on anything one doesn't need, in 2026....is a great idea.

But counterargument would be...if you have it to spend, and you already have a JK vintage alto, this would be pretty familiar feeling to you and Baritones are hecka fun to play and it's a GREAT DOUBLE.

Not many players play Bari, so they (bari players) are usually in demand in a lotta localities.

But again, hopefully the guy is aware his askng is a good 15-20% too high. My general suggestion to folks selling is 'take the min you wanna get for it and ask 10-20% higher". Then you'll get offers which still hit your desired number.

If he isn't aware of his high pricetag....he will learn soon....

...
And a large number of them sound like alto players slumming. They don't spend the time to develop the airstream and tone they need, so they can't project, so they buy mouthpieces to get a high-baffle, reed-flappy, buzzy sound that - to be honest - doesn't really project all that much better; but it doesn't sound very good either.

If you'll spend the time and effort to learn how to PLAY the baritone (and it all comes down to air, one way or another, pretty much), you'll be able to produce a variety of tones at a range of dynamic levels, and you'll get called.

Similar threads... or are they? Maybe not but they could be worth reading anyway 😀
