Misc recording John Lewis Xmas

@Jeanette & @Rob Pealing thanks for the comments. It's a very nice melody and the phrases lend to easy note placement.
@Colin the Bear you are absolutely spot on in all respects. Probably the reason I know it so well and the words are an aide memoire. Until I saw the John Lewis add it wasn't a piece I'd considered playing. Not keen on Vaults though. Al

And while we're on Christmas adds, what about that Waitrose one? It shows a Robin migrating. They don't. That's why they're here in the winter. And two males, sharing a mince pie. Don't they fight to the death if one male trespasses into another's territory. Very peace and goodwill.

Hope no one minds, I thought I'd have a play with this myself. Teacher not here for another week so I thought I'd have a go myself, I've seen him do it...takes about 10 mins to work out a song 🙂....

...damn...Ok, first, I cheated a bit, my teacher plays a few notes and says oh yeah...that's in the key of X. I downloaded a backing track that said it was in the key of E 🙂

E!!!! Have you seen how many sharps are in there? I have to confess here, I was going to look up the fingering for D# as I'd never heard of it, then I worked out I think it's the same as Eb 🙂

Now, I worked out a few bits, mostly probably wrong, and it didn't take me 10 mins, it's taken half of yesterday and most of today; and yeah, I only got the first verse so far 🙂. The bit I found the most tricky was around the final bit I did 'when will love be true, to me' I think. Listening to Randy Crawford she sounds a bit out of key in this bit so it's difficult to work out what she was supposed to be singing (of course, there's always the chance that she meant to be off key 🙂).

Maybe more later.

Randy out of key! :w00t:

Never, go wash your mouth out with soapy water as my old Mum would say.

Nice effort @Tiberius . It's a nice tune to play. Learn to sing it i.e. With the words not just hum or whistle the tune, it will give you a feel for the timing and articulation. That's what I do when I work songs out, you'll find you're more than halfway there when you come to pick up your sax.
Regards Al

Wow! Randy off key?
Not as much off key as me of course 🙂

Ok, I've got about half of it 'done' now, loads of mistakes and not quite worked out the last bit yet...but we're getting there, quite good fun too.

After spending a few hours trying to 'fit it in', I realised that I was starting a few bars early, hopefully this is the right place to start now 🙂

Ok, final go. The bits I thought were 'out of key' are where she swaps to singing G and F natural rather than G# and F# in the 2nd half of the melody. I couldn't work that out. Still haven't got the last bit correct, but it's close enough for now.

As Al says, this was great fun. Anyway, still not perfect by far, but I'm moving onto the xmas songs now.
