I wrenched open my wallet recently, so quickly bought a book, before it slammed shut again. The book is Patterns for Jazz, which I'm sure I'm not ready for, but probably will never be, so, hey...
Are there kind people who own and understand it (@Mark Hancock for instance ) to enlighten me:

Exercise 1: I was gratified to be able to play it straight through - major triads, by ascending semitones;
ditto Exercise 2: by circle of 4ths;
Exercise 3: by whole tones;
But Exercise 4 starts by minor 3rds, then makes what seems like a horrible fudge to get out of returning to C, by jumping 2 whole tones instead, then back to minor 3rds...? Am I missing something more significant?
(I didn't go on to Exercise 5, but it looks perfectly straightforward )
