Not only is Basie famous for the notes he didn't play*, but also for what he didn't say.
Later in life he used to claim he couldn't remember many tunes. At a concert the compare asked him what numbers he was going to play that night.
Basie said quizzically "Numbers?............(long pause during which the compare wished the floor would open and swallow him)....... Number."
*Last Saturday OG, Smiffy and I had a look at Lester Leaps In. The original has no real middle 8, just Basie playing a couple of sparse chords - which of course fit perfectly.
Oh yes, re Houston Person, I've mentioned on other threads how Griff pointed me in his direction after seeing him in New York. Saxman's youtube link and Luluna's comment are spot on. Houston's a lovely player.
