Happy Tuesday, Cafesaxfolk! A record I had the pleasure of working on last year was released about a week ago. Like Morton and Matt Block's previous record, the music sounds like it's from many decades ago, and in fact many of the tunes were written in the '60s by Morton, brought to life by his grandson Matt many years later. (Matt is a wonderful trumpet player, writer/producer, and record label owner.) I had the pleasure of recording all the woodwinds for this album, "The Lonely Sea," from my home studio, with the exception of bari sax which was done by my buddy Mat Schumer in Las Vegas. There are quite a few chill and moody tunes on the record but here's one of the more uptempo joints with a gratuitous tenor solo starting a little under a minute in.

For all my fellow gear geeks out there, here's what's being used saxophone-wise:
Tenor (solo etc): Yamaha 82z tenor, Marantz Florida double-ring 7**, Rigotti 4M
Alto: Guardala/B&S, Selmer Magni-tone mouthpiece opened by Marantz to .085, V16 3.5
And recording-wise, the mics used were my Neumann U87ai paired with my NoHype Audio LRM-V ribbon, blended to taste by the mixing engineer (Charles Van Kirk). I actually can't remember if I recorded these into my ultra-clean RME preamps or my newer Phoenix Audio Ascent2EQ amps but the results would be much the same regardless, the Phoenix mostly wins for tactile control options. No outboard compression or EQ.
